Changmin opened the door to the apartment and saw Annie sitting alone in the living room, her face buried in her hands. The room felt heavy with a stillness that was interrupted only by her quiet sobs.
He slipped off his shoes and coat, his heart sinking as he approached her. "Annie? You didn't sleep?" His voice was filled with worry. Annie looked up, and Changmin’s heart dropped when he saw the tears streaming down her face.
"Hey, what happened? Why are you crying?" He rushed to her side, his hands reaching out as if to comfort her.
Annie’s voice was choked with emotion. "He came."
"Who?" Changmin asked, a mix of confusion and dread tightening his chest. "J… Jungkook?" The name felt like a punch to the gut. His mind raced with fear and anxiety. He had spent the last three years building a life with Annie and kids, and now it seemed like it could all unravel. Jungkook's presence threatened everything he had worked for.
Annie’s silence was answer enough. Changmin’s heart pounded furiously. The idea that Jungkook might want to reclaim Annie, and possibly the life they had together, filled him with dread. He couldn’t imagine Jungkook letting her go easily.
"D… does he know about the kids?" Changmin asked, his voice trembling slightly. The thought of Jungkook meeting his children and potentially disrupting their lives was almost unbearable.
Annie nodded weakly, her eyes brimming with sadness. "He wants us back. He says he’s sorry, but his apologies can’t heal the wounds from these three years."
"He left so easily?" Changmin's disbelief was evident. He knew Jungkook's stubbornness and his intense feelings for Annie; it was hard to believe he could just walk away and then come back like nothing had happened.
"He gave me the card of the hotel where he's staying," Annie said, her voice cracking. "He said I’d need it. But I’d rather die than go back to him."
Changmin was lost in thought, the weight of the situation pressing down on him.
"Chang?" Annie's voice pulled him from his thoughts, sounding faint and distant.
"Huh?" He flinched, realizing he had been far away mentally.
"Where are you lost?" she asked, her tone a mix of frustration and curiosity.
"Do you still love him?" Changmin asked suddenly, his voice barely above a whisper, but the question hung heavily in the air.
Annie’s eyes widened with shock. "What are you saying? Why would I?" Her voice was firm but tinged with hurt, as if the very idea of still loving Jungkook was a painful insult.
"Just asking, so what do you think now?" Changmin's voice was soft but carried a note of worry.
Annie shook her head, trying to push away the tears. "I’m not thinking about him. I don’t want him, and neither do the kids. He’s nothing to us anymore," she said, her tone firm as she wiped her eyes.
"And me?" Changmin asked, his voice suddenly uncertain.
Annie realized that Changmin was feeling insecure, worried that Jungkook's return might jeopardize their relationship. She took a deep breath, trying to offer reassurance. "Changmin, you’re the only man I trust completely. You don’t need to worry about him. You’re a part of our family. Family isn’t just about blood relations; it’s about the care and support you give. What you’ve done for us is beyond words. I respect you the most."
Changmin managed a weak smile, understanding that their lives might be about to change. He knew Jungkook better than Annie did. She only saw his obsessive and possessive side, while Changmin had witnessed the lengths Jungkook had gone to in his pursuit of Annie.
