Chapter 2: Uneasy Reunions

In the days following Richmond's return, the palace atmosphere grew even more strained. Richmond, who had always been emotionally distant, seemed to be even more detached now, his interactions with Courtney perfunctory and cold. He spent much of his time with Eleanor, discussing matters that Courtney felt should be confined to private council.

One evening, after a particularly tense council meeting, Courtney confronted Richmond in their private chambers. Her voice was icy, her eyes hard. "Richmond, why is Eleanor being consulted on matters of state? This is highly irregular."

Richmond's response was as devoid of warmth as ever. "Eleanor has proven herself insightful. Her perspective is useful."

Courtney's tone remained steely, her expression unreadable. "Useful or disruptive? You're sidelining your advisors and your queen."

Richmond met her gaze, his eyes cold. "Perhaps if you were more open to change, we wouldn't need outside counsel."

Their exchange ended in silence, both of them retreating into their own thoughts. The butler, who had overheard the conversation, approached Courtney later with quiet concern. "Your Majesty, the staff are uneasy. Eleanor's presence feels... unsettling."

Courtney nodded, her mind already turning over possibilities. "Keep an eye on her. Report anything unusual."

As Courtney lay awake that night, her thoughts were filled not with concern for Richmond, but with the implications of Eleanor's influence. Her marriage, devoid of love and warmth, had long been a matter of duty and appearances. Now, she feared that duty was being undermined by an unknown force.
