Chapter 4: Manipulation

Eleanor's influence over Richmond grew more overt, much to Courtney's dismay. Richmond began to implement policies and make decisions that were clearly influenced by Eleanor, often at odds with traditional council advice. The court, already tense, became a hotbed of whispers and suspicion.

During a council meeting, Richmond proposed redirecting funds from military defenses to vague humanitarian efforts, citing Eleanor's guidance. "Eleanor believes we should focus more on healing and rebuilding rather than on war preparations."

Courtney, maintaining her cold and composed exterior, spoke with a voice of authority. "The security of Eldoria must not be compromised. Our defenses are essential."

Richmond's reply was dismissive, his tone colder than ever. "Perhaps your adherence to the old ways blinds you to new possibilities, Courtney."

Courtney's eyes flashed with a hint of frustration, but her voice remained steady. "New possibilities must be weighed carefully. Reckless changes can lead to instability."

After the meeting, the commander approached Courtney with a concerned expression. "Your Majesty, Eleanor's influence on the king is becoming dangerous. We must be vigilant."

Courtney nodded, her mind working through the implications. "Gather more evidence. We need to be certain before we act."

The palace staff, increasingly wary of Eleanor, reported more strange occurrences. Unexplained illnesses, failing crops, and eerie symbols found in secluded areas of the palace heightened the sense of unease. The commander and the butler worked discreetly, piecing together the evidence of Eleanor's dark influence.

Courtney, with her cold, analytical mind, reviewed the situation. She knew that any action against Eleanor had to be based on undeniable proof, not only for the sake of the kingdom but also to avoid further destabilizing her already strained marriage and the court.
