"If it's ever going to end."
I hear over the radio as we pull into the driveway. "School was so boring! Why do I have to go? There isn't anything new that I'm learning." Maddie complains as she gets out of the jeep. Shadow trails behind her before she shuts the door.
"You need to keep up appearances, Little Storm." I say as I'm unlocking the front door to our house. Hearing Snowball greet us. "Hi, Snowy. Besides, wouldn't you miss Rafael? You guys are close in age and skipped the same grades."
She sighs, walking into the house and dropping her bag next to the coat hanger. "I would miss him. And he would probably get bullied more if I wasn't there to stand up for both of us." She said as she flopped onto the couch grabbing the TV remote to watch something. Snowy climbed up onto her lap.
I stopped in the fridge to grab some leftover spaghetti to heat up for us both as Shadow ran over to her food bowl to wait patiently. "Wait, you guys are getting bullied? It's only the first week of school." I looked over to her as I popped some in bowls and into the microwave. Putting some more cat food in Snow's bowl and some dog food into Shadow's bowl for her to eat.
"Yeah, they pick on me since they believe you're my sister, and because Raf and I are sort of nerds." She said petting her kitten, as she turned on the next episode of Gravity Falls to watch. I grabbed silverware as well as the bowls and went over to the couch flopping down next to her.
Handing her bowl over I said, "So how are you standing up for yourself? Please don't be starting any fights. You know what I say about that- "
"Don't start it, but definitely finish it. I know." She said giggling slightly. "They don't know it's me but I sort of make static electricity come off so they get shocked if they touch Raf." She says nervously.
"Little Storm," I sternly look at her. "You are not supposed to be using those at school, or anywhere outside of this home." I emphasized as I started to eat my food.
"I know, but I am careful. They don't even realize I do it." She argued softly while shoving food in her mouth quickly. Snowy got off her lap to go eat her food. "I know the risks." She whispered.
I sighed, "I just want you to be careful and safe. I don't know what I would do if you got hurt, or worse. So please be careful."
"I know. And I will try to be as careful as I can, and not to use them often." She agreed as we finished our food and a few episodes.
Once we were done, she grabbed her bag and went to finish her homework in her room, while I went to clean the dishes.
My hands tremble as I finish the dishes. Breath almost coming out in short, trembling exhales. Using the counter to try and keep my balance. I can barely hear Shadow coming up to poke me with her snout.
Everything seemed to slow down and speed up all at the same time. Electricity as well as the sound of my heart in my ears. My vision started to go blurry as my cheeks started to feel wet with tears that had escaped. Feeling a tug on my shirt pulled my gaze down to see Shadow trying to get my attention.
A phone ringing pulled me back to reality. Everything stopped. Something clattered to the ground behind me. My breathing evened out. My heart still racing but the sound leaving my ears, with Shadows whining replaced it. Snapping back, I rushed over to my phone and answered.
"H-hello?" I stammered out. Still trying to calm my racing heart.
"Hey, Brookelynn!" I hear on the other end. "Does Maddison want to hang out with Raf? He's asking to hang out."
"Oh, hey Mrs. Esquivel. Yeah, I can ask her. Does he want me to drop them off somewhere?" I was relieved that she seemed to not notice my panic.
"He said he'd figure it out once you pick him up." She laughed, as I walked over to Maddie's room, knocking on the door.
