Day after day went by; they all seemed quite similar. Monday through Friday was school. With the combination of a school building very similar to an oven and only a week and a half left of school, things couldn't be better. Everyone was too hot to do anything so the days flew by quickly and calmly.

But of course there were the parties.

With school almost ending, there was no better excuse for anyone to have a party. And only because of my friends, I didn't hold myself back from going to one or two. Luckily, I was smart enough this time to beware of time and my level of sobriety. I wasn't planning on having anymore sleepovers with Matt anytime soon.

Speaking of him, I wonder what he does when almost all the people his age are still in school?

"Hey Joy, do you know what Matt does while we're still in school?" I asked Joy.

"Yeah I think he told me once he hangs with dropouts." Joy responds.

"I thought so."

"Why are you thinking about Matt all of a sudden? Hmmm?" She teased me.

"Oh please. Don't start thinking like that." I tried ending this dreaded topic.

"Who's this Matt I'm hearing about all of a sudden?" Don walks up to us, joining our conversation.

"Just Cassie's boyfriend." Joy fills in for him.

"And why haven't I, your best friend, been notified about this?" Don questioned me.

"Joy shut up."

"What I'm only speaking the truth? Oh and Donny boy," Joy whispers to Don.

"Yeah?"

"We all know I'm her real best friend." She continues.

And the argument on who's the better friend only starts there. This happens way to often for our friendship to still be considered healthy.

Matt was invited to another party by one of his high school dropout friends. To be honest, the thought of going to the first party was quite sketchy but we had nothing else better to do. And let me say it was a little of a surprise to us at how it all went down.

Normal high school parties served as a distraction for students so they could just let go and relax. Slowly giving themselves up to alcoholic drinks and leaving their lives in the hands of fate. Dropout parties served a similar purpose but for better reasons.

Many of them had ran away from home, kicked out of their parent's home, or got themselves stuck in some unavoidable situation. Their parties were their escape.

I didn't know any of Matt's friends personally, but I recognized a few from remembering their faces. They always looked worn out from taking the beatings of real life, changing their expectations when going to a party. Almost all of them, if not all, just wanted to get high and let loose; living the moment as if it were their last. And I preferred these parties opposed to others. I could be me and care less about it.

"Are you gonna get high this time?" Matt questioned me.

"I think i'll have to pass again, you can yourself though." I quickly stated.

"Drugs aren't really my thing either."

"Then why'd you bother coming to this bloody party then!?" Some random junkie asked Matt.
