Coles POV
I felt so bad - I didn't know. I stood and watched her walk away with tears in her eyes. How could I make it up to her?
I grabbed a cinnamon roll from the bakery and multiple bouquet of her favourite flowers from the flower section along with a large bag of Reese's mini cups. I left them by the front of her hotel door and knocked, quickly trying to dart to my room. Before my had could reach my handle, I heard my name.
"Cole?" I turned to face Y/n, who had very obviously been crying.
"Sorry" I apologised quickly.
"Cole can I ask you something" she stepped closer to me. "Last summer... we were really close" I nodded along. "Maybe I was just crazy but - I thought we had something"
"I mean my argument with Phil really ruined our friendship-"
"Is that all it was? A friendship?" Her voice was really quiet as she looked up at me. My phone was buzzing in my pocket but I ignored it.
"Shit I mean-" I realised what she meant, and i couldn't put what I wanted to say into words. "I mean I thought we had... something... too"
"So you liked me?" she asked. I hesitated.
"Yea" I said at last. There was no point keeping it a secret. It wasn't a secret.
"Wow" she seemed surprised but disappointed and happy at the same time. It was confusing. Since the secret was out, i thought id tell her the truth about me and Phil.
"Y/n, can I tell you something?" I was nervous how she'd react. Phil had never told her and I wouldn't know how he would react either if he knew that I was going to tell her. When she nodded, I proceeded. "Me and Phil - last summer. Our argument... it was about you" her face dropped.
"Seriously?" Her voice was hardly audible. I took a deep breath.
"I asked him if I could ask you to be my girlfriend"
"Why would you need to ask him?" She seemed confused.
"He was my best friend. I didn't... I didn't want whatever could've happened between us to affect our relationship"
"Which it clearly did" she stated the truth and it hurt to realise.
"I guess it did" I sighed. "But he was sort of right... he brought up the whole 'whore' thing but I swear Y/n I was drunk and I did not know. I didn't know you when I said it but I know you now" it felt refreshing to get it all out, and in a way she seemed relieved too.
"It's ok Cole" she sighed loudly. "I forgive you"
"You don't need-"
"I forgive you" she smiled lightly. "You're right - I didn't know you and you didn't know me. I'm just hurt that you never approached me in the first place I suppose"
"Yea I suppose I should've asked you instead" I joked slightly and she laughed. There was an awkward pause for a moment before she said something.
"It's never too late you know" she spoke quietly but I heard her clearly.
"What?" I wasn't sure if she meant what I thought she might mean.
"You know... it's never too late for this" she indicated the two of us.
"Better late than never" I joked. "How about we... give it a try?"
She nodded. "You'll take me out on a date - no one is to tell Phil - and we will take it slow. I'm still slightly mad at you and I'd love to punch you right now but I won't"
"Tonight?" I asked.
"Cole your playing Bosnia tonight" she reminded me.
"Oh shit" I whipped my phone out my pocket... and surely enough the buzz of my phone had been my team mates trying to get a hold of me. "Shit shit shit"
"You forgot?" She laughed.
"Yes I forgot. Shit. Sorry" I panicked and tried to find the keycard to my room.
"I'll message you" she told me.
"I don't have your number, got a new phone" I quickly opened my door.
"I'll find you later" she winked and went back into her hotel room.
—————
I scored a penalty in the sixtieth minute and it felt great.
Yes it was a friendly and it didn't mean anything but it felt great to score for my country. Even Phil seemed happy for once.
The game ended 3-0 over Bosnia and Herzegovina and it was good enough for me.
Y/n was somewhere in the stands watching the game with the rest of the wags and families.
Kyle Walker had rented out a bar somewhere in London to celebrate the win and the upcoming euros. It was filled with bright flashing lights and alcohol for days. It wasn't long before everyone was pissed and having a great time.
I tried to stay light on the drinks but I couldn't help it and the last thing I could remember was seeing Y/n at the bar ordering a drink.
—————
That next morning I woke up feeling groggy and hungover. Somehow, I wasn't wearing clothes but I could smell the alcohol all over my skin and hair. I thought I could remember Walker and Grealish throwing there drinks around at people at one point but I wasn't sure if I had made that up or not.
I rolled over to try and get more comfortable, my body touching someone else's.
I was confused as to which girl I had brought back to the room with me but when I smelt her sweet perfume I realised.
"Shit"
It was y/n.
