Y/N knew he had to keep his word to find a way out for his new friends.

The problem? Y/N had no idea where to begin.

He had scoured his laptop, but the files were encrypted in a way he couldn't crack. He had turned to the pages he'd collected but there was nothing that specifically noted an exit. It felt like a dead end until he remembered the letter from Santa, which reminded him of something—no, someone.

There had been an old family friend who knew a lot about technology, particularly obscure and experimental kinds. His parents had mentioned him only a few times before they passed away in that terrible accident years ago, although he did stop by every now and again to help with programming when staff was short. Y/N hadn't spoken to him in years, but if anyone had the knowledge to help, it would be him.

His name was Mr. Callahan.

Y/N grabbed his backpack and slung it over his shoulder. "Alright, guys, I'm going out. I think I know someone who might be able to help."

"REALLY?!" Kaufmo hollered from the screen, pressing his palms against the screen. Y/N nodded. "Yeah, don't get your hopes up TOO high though. I haven't talked to this person in a HOT min- a very long time." Y/N quickly corrected himself knowing they don't understand today's internet slang.

"Be careful, Y/N," came a softer voice from Ragatha.

Y/N nodded and closed his laptop, locking the characters back inside their strange world. He pocketed the headset and headed out the door. "Don't make too much noise, I'll be back again soon!"

...

Inside Y/N's laptop, the usual chaos of The Amazing Digital Circus had settled into something of a lull. Y/N had been gone for about an hour by this point, and with nothing new happening, the nine digital denizens of the Circus began growing restless.

Pomni decided to rest on her bed staring quietly at the ceiling.

Pomni stared blankly until a thought hit her.

What will she do when she leaves?

The thought hadn't even occurred to her before because she assumed once she left her memories would be restored and she would resume the life she had.

But the more she thought about it, the more this question bothered her. While yes, she DID want to leave...but what if she came to the circus as a method of escape?

She didn't remember the details of her life, or even who she was for that matter. She came up with various possible scenarios in her head, but she also pointed out the flaws in them to herself. Could she be an old woman trying to relive her youth? No, she would've been older and wiser if she was, nor would she be 25. Was she a murderer or a convicted felon who somehow got her hands on the headset? No, she'd be a lot meaner if that was the case, and on top of that, she didn't even know the first thing about how to kill someone.

Well, she did, but getting away with it scott-free without anybody suspecting her? That was something that would require planning, she was smart but not a murder frenzy psychopath killing level of smart. It would also require an alibi, and most importantly: staying calm. She was too anxious for that, so people would see through her in an instant. Not to mention the guilt she would feel afterward...actually now that she thought more about it, what reason could she POSSIBLY have to justify murdering someone?

Never mind, the point is, she didn't think she was a killer.

What if she was running from something?

Was she a bum?

Was she a stressed-out worker?

Was she a parent?

Who WAS she?

But then Y/N popped into her head. The guy that's trying to help them. He didn't even know them, he didn't HAVE to help them, but he did it anyway. That's what it means to be human she supposed. Helping others even when there's no REAL way you can.

But she was getting sidetracked, what would she do once she got out? If she didn't really HAVE a life necessarily, if she had nothing to go home to, and if it's Y/N then she didn't really mind being a permanent resident of Y/N's laptop...

Her thoughts then drifted if she had someone to come home to. If she didn't have anyone...then maybe...she could be with Y/N...he's been nice to her, he cares about her, he's a hard worker. She wouldn't mind dating him. She could see it now. They would go on a couple of dates to test the waters. They would move in together. They would be happy...

Pomni's thoughts then drifted to Gangle. She knew that Gangle liked Y/N too, but if she and Gangle left the digital world, how would she and Gangle be with Y/N? Polyamory was frowned upon in real life (and for good reason too.), so there was no way that was going to work...

But at the same time, she didn't want Gangle to have her heart broken.
