Frankie hated the first day of school. The first week actually.
She hated that she had months of summer to sleep in and all of a sudden, she has to wake up at 6am to spend almost seven hours with kids she didn't even like or know.
Which is why she is where she is now, sleeping in Aisha's bed after she said the night before that she wouldn't go to school. Aisha couldn't go to school without Frankie so she insisted the girl sleepover so Aisha could make sure she actually went.
Frankie was curled up in Aisha's blanket, awake and staring up at Aisha's ceiling. Aisha was at her desk, making sure she had everything in her backpack ready for school. She looked up at Frankie and rolled her eyes, a small smile on her face. "Can you please get up?"
"Why?" Frankie asked, her words muffled after she pulled her head under the blanket. Aisha laughed, walking towards the edge of the bed and ripping the blankets off of the girl completely.
"Because we have to go to school." Aisha said as Frankie groaned, sitting up in Aisha's bed and tiredly rubbing her eyes.
"I'm not going." Frankie grumbled, her voice still raspy from just waking up. Aisha rolled her eyes and sat down at the foot of her bed. "Why are you not going?" Aisha asked, giving Frankie a playful smile, knowing the girl would end up going to school.
Frankie huffed, her shoulders slumping sadly. "Too stressful." She muttered and Aisha's face scrunched. When Frankie moved to let her feet dangle off the bed, Aisha moved to sit closer to her.
"Too stressful?" Aisha asked before she started to smile. "You are literally at the top of our class effortlessly." Aisha asked and Frankie ran a hand through her hair, turning to face Aisha.
"Exactly!" Frankie groaned. She took a deep breath and looked down at her hands. She picked away at her chipped nail polish as she shook her head. "What if this year is different?" Frankie asked, her voice quieter now, almost embarrassed. "What if I'm no longer at the top and I let people down?"
Aisha frowned. She had no idea Frankie felt like this. "Who would you let down?" Aisha asked quietly and Frankie rested her head on the girls shoulder, shrugging. "My parents. All they've ever known is me being at the top of my class and I guess... I'm just nervous that if that changes they'll be disappointed."
All of sudden, Frankie groaned, dropping her head into her hands. "God, I sound so stuck up."
Aisha grabbed Frankie's hands and gently pulled them away from Frankie's face, giving her a small smile. "You do not sound stuck up." Aisha said, making Frankie turn to her.
Aisha smiled and tilted her head comfortingly. "You sound like a teenage girl."
Frankie laughed and Aisha rubbed her back. "And your parents are some of the sweetest people I've ever met. They wouldn't care if you got 2nd in the class, or 30th—" Aisha's words were cut off by Frankie gasping. "Oh my God! What if I get 30th?!"
