Frankie leaned against the wall of her locker as she read To All the Boys I've Loved Before. The movie came out that summer and now, she wanted to read the books.
She didn't have the same free period as Aisha, but she did have the same one as Miguel. He offered her to come to the library with him but Frankie declined, she weirdly liked the floor.
Her reading time was rudely interrupted when someone groaned as they turned down the hallway Frankie was reading in. She raised her head to see who it was and immediately rolled her eyes and turned back to her book when she realized it was Demetri.
As he got closer, Demetri noticed there was someone sitting on the floor, and when he realized it was Frankie, he scoffed. "Oh, great. It's you." He muttered in a monotone voice.
Frankie placed her bookmark in her book and looked up at the boy. Demetri now stood at Frankie's feet, tilting his head. "Don't you have a test to get 99% on?" Demetri asked angrily.
Frankie smiled tauntingly, resting the book on her side, completely invested on messing with Demetri now. "One hundred actually. You'd be the one to get 99%." Frankie said proudly, making Demetri roll his eyes.
Frankie took this time to look the boy up and down, her eyebrows furrowed in disgust when she saw his backpack covered in something white. "What happened to you bag?"
Demetri scoffed. "Kyler happened." He muttered, dropping his bag onto the ground and sitting down beside Frankie. Frankie watched him with wide eyes, shocked he would sit next to her. Demetri groaned, making sure to keep his backpack a good foot away from him so he didn't touch any of the yogurt.
"Now, I have to clean this thing again without my parents noticing." Demetri grumbled in annoyance. "God, I can't have them make another phone call to Blatt. Eli's announcement made me want to shrivel up and die and it wasn't even about me."
It was like a battle in Frankie's head. Even though Demetri didn't say the nicest things about her, she knew how horrible Blatt's speeches could be.
Frankie turned to Demetri, giving him a small smile. "If you want, you can come to my place after school and wash your bag there?" Frankie asked, her voice quiet and higher the longer she spoke. Her finger tapped rapidly against her knee, anxiously waiting for Demetri to answer.
When Demetri scoffed, Frankie's smile faltered. "Oh, so you can hold that over my head along with beating me in just about every academic?" Demetri spat. Frankie's eyebrows furrowed as a frown grew on her face.
She shook her head and straightened up, her eyes never leaving Demetri. "I wasn't asking to hold it over your—" The bell interrupted Frankie's words.
Demetri stood up, grabbing his backpack and being careful not to get any yogurt on himself. "I don't need your pity, Frankie. I'm fine." He muttered, walking away.
