SURFING in the cold waters of the sea was the best feeling ever. The waves crashed against her skin, making her feel so alive.

Maliah Woods loved surfing. Well, she loved everything related to the ocean; it didn't scare her–she grew up in it.

Her parents were both marine biologists, so from a young age, she was introduced to all of this. Her parents' love for the ocean was infectious, no surprise it had become a home that she had grown to love.

Sometimes, they would take Maliah on research trips. Where she learned about different species of fish and sea plants.

Her parents told her that Maliah meant "Star of the sea" just like a Starfish. That's why they chose it.

'Starfish' was just a nickname her dad could use, it was weird if other people who were not him went around calling her that.

As the sun began to set, she swam back to the shore. Maliah emerged from the water, droplets glistening on her sun-kissed skin. Her wet hair clung to her back, as she ran a hand through it, moving it away from her face. Her surfboard was tucked under one arm, as she walked through the sandy shore back to her house leaving a trail of wet footprints.

She opened a gate that led to the backyard of her house. She walked past the pool, placing her surfboard where it could dry.

Maliah grabbed her towel and dried her feet then wrapped it around her waist before opening the sliding door to walk into the living room.

The aroma of pasta filled the air. She walked to the kitchen and peeked her head over her dad's shoulder to look at the food he was making.

She loved her dad, he was the nicest human being ever.

"What are you making?" she asked.

Her dad turned around, raising his eyebrows "Seriously?"

"Okay, forgive me for my stupid questions." she laughed, raising her hands in mock surrender.

"Since you're here already, your mom and I want to talk to you about something," he said, his expression turning serious.

"About?" she asked, raising her eyebrows curiously.

"Let's wait for your mom first. Go take a shower while I finish the pasta." Maliah nodded and left the kitchen, heading to her room.

Why did he mention it if he was going to make her wait. Was it something bad? Her mind started filling with thoughts wondering what did she do for her parents want to talk to her.

She placed her beach towel to dry, then went to her closet to grab her pajamas and took a shower.

***

Maliah sat at the dining table with her parents. Her dad was serving the food on the plates, placing them in front of them.

After he finished serving his wife and daughter Miles took a seat, looking at her mom immediately.

Maliah grabbed her fork and took a bite of her pasta as her parents looked at each other, silently communicating.

"So, Maliah..." her mother, Asha began. Maliah looked up, raising her eyebrows.

"Your dad and I decided it was for the best if you got a summer job this year."

"But mom, this is my last summer break-" Before Maliah could continue, her dad interrupted

"That's why, you need at least some job experience before you finish school. It will do you great, Maliah" Her dad added, trying to convince her.

"Look, Thomas also got a summer job so if he can, so can you."

Did they seriously get this idea just because her best friend got a summer job? She felt like this was torture. But It can't be that bad.

"What jobs are available?" she asked, giving in to her parent's wishes.

Her mom handed her a paper. It was a list of available jobs and the number to contact. There was babysitting, that's an absolute no. Dog walking? That seems boring.

"Look at the list, and you can tell us your choice in the morning," Maliah nodded, analyzing the list.

This seemed like an awesome way to start the summer.
