CHAPTER TWO
WHEN she was eight years old, her parents gifted her a bicycle. It was beautiful, a vibrant shade of teal with a small silver bell that her parents added just in case she ever sneaked out– they could hear the bell.
She never thought about sneaking out, so it was unnecessary but at the moment she thought it was very cute and rang it almost all day. Making her parents regret putting the bell in the first place.
Maliah had never ridden a bike; this was her first time. Her parents went outside with her to see her ride her bicycle. A wide smile spread across her face, and she felt her heartbeat racing as she gripped the handlebars.
"Sweetie, let me tell you how to do it. You need to keep balance-" Before her mother could finish, Maliah took off. She felt like she got it until one of the wheels started wobbling.
The feeling of the bike tilting to the side made her panic, as she landed with a soft thud on the street, scraping her knees in the fall.
Her parents quickly got up to rush towards her but paused when they saw their neighbor approach her. He had tousled dark hair, was not much taller than her, and was about her age.
The boy offered his hand to her since she was still on the ground. She took his hand, and he helped her up gently. She brushed off the dirt from her scraped knee, wincing a bit but managing to smile at him.
"Thank you," she said shyly, looking at him, and he smiled at her.
"My name is Thomas. What's yours?" he asked.
"I'm Maliah," she answered, her face getting slightly red.
Her parents watched from afar, their hearts filled with tenderness witnessing this little moment between the two kids.
Their moment was interrupted by another boy their age running towards them.
"What the shuck, you shucking left me alone." Maliah's face turned into pure confusion by his wording.
"I was helping my new friend, Maliah. Maliah, this is Minho, my best friend." he introduced them both, feeling like he wanted to jump from the excitement.
"Hi, what does 'shuck' mean?" she asked, looking at Minho in confusion.
"I'm not allowed to swear anymore, so I changed the words. These aren't swearing words so my parents can't ground me." Minho explained.
After that, Thomas took his time to teach Maliah how to ride her bike and that moment led to now, the best friendship anyone could ever have.
Thomas was lying down on her bed as he scrolled on his phone and played music. He was playing Taylor Swift; he loved her.
Maliah's bedroom was very neat, mostly because her mom always had to force her to clean her room when they were kids and now, she does it without being told, which leads to her mom being surprised after walking into her room to tell her to clean.
She had a white bookshelf; it had all the Percy Jackson books and some seashells she collected with him at the beach.
Maliah was sitting on the edge of her bed looking at the list of summer jobs, fully concentrated.
Thomas placed his phone on his side, and he moved his head to look at her.
"Why don't you just be a lifeguard with me? You can say that the hot lifeguard is your best friend." Thomas suggested with a small smirk, but clearly joking. She looked up at him before answering.
"What hot lifeguard? Minho?" Thomas's smirk falls off when she says that, and she bursts into laughter at his reaction.
"Oh my god! You should have seen your face when I said that. Your reaction was hilarious." she laughed; her laugh was infectious because now he felt like he wanted to laugh too.
"Okay, not funny. If he hears that you are going to give him a huge ego boost and he doesn't need that."
"Yeah, he has plenty already, but seriously, me as a lifeguard?" She frowned, her voice rising in pitch a bit as she complained
"I mean you like the water, so why not? You are always saying you are the lost child of Poseidon, so you'll do great."
"That's because I am the lost child of Poseidon." she chuckles before going back to complaining.
"It just sounds really boring." She placed the list away and moved to lay down beside him, propping herself on her elbows.
"Working with your two best friends sounds boring? You must be crazy, Mar." he looked at her with disbelief but held back a small smile.
"Fine, I'll give it a chance, but you and Minho better not do anything to get me fired."
"Okay, deal." he extends his hand to close the deal with Maliah.
"Deal." she shook his hand.
Being a lifeguard for the summer was going to be interesting, but most likely not fun.
