Summary * Perched atop a high mountain, with it turrets, towers, and sparkling windows, the strange and splendid Hogwarts Castle awaits you. *

*The Hogwarts Express travels across the British landscape, the sky a mix of that orange and blue hues that only appear at sunset. The Great Hall is lit with hundreds of floating candles and hundreds of students sitting at benches. Emma and the other first-years stand in a small group before Professor McGonagall*

Professor McGonagall: Welcome to Hogwarts. Before the Welcoming Feast, we must sort all first year students into their proper houses. The Sorting Ceremony is very important. While you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. The four houses are called Gryffindor, the brave and chivalrous. Hufflepuff, the kind and diligent. Ravenclaw, the witty and wise. And Slytherin, the cunning and ambitious. Each house has its own noble history, and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. I hope you all will be fine additions to their ranks.

*Professor McGonagall calls out the students one at a time in alphabetical order*

McG: ...and now for... Grant, Emma!

*Emma walks to the stool and puts the hat on her head as whispers break out in the Great Hall*

Sorting Hat: Hmm... very interesting. I haven't seen one like this in a long time. And what house are you hoping for, hm? Best make it... Slytherin!

*Emma gets off the stool and heads to the Slytherin table, where Slytherin house are cheering for her.*

Emma (to herself): A Slytherin! I can't believe it. I can't believe I'm really at Hogwarts. I'd better sit down. The Headmaster is about to speak...

*Professor Dumbledore approaches the owl podium to make a speech.*

Professor Dumbledore: Welcome! Welcome to another year at Hogwarts. The past few years have seen a great weight lift from our world. The Boy Who Lived, Harry Potter, is safe. Years from now, young Harry will be old enough to attend Hogwarts... But for now, it's your turn! Remember, while you are at Hogwarts your triumphs will earn you House Points, while any rule-breaking will lose House Points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to your house.

*Food magically appears on the tables in front of them and the students begin to eat. After the feast the Heads of House appear, one by one, and instruct their students to leave the hall.*

Professor Snape: The feast has ended. All Slytherins will immediately proceed to the Slytherin Common Room.

*The Slytherin Common Room is located in the dungeons, under the lake, and is lit by an eerie green glow from the windows that show only the Great Lake. Several students are heard chatting.*

First-Year: I'm going to earn the most House Points in Slytherin!

Third-Year: Our Common Room has to be the best.

First-Year: Don't tell anyone, but I didn't really want to be put in Slytherin.

*Emma approaches Rowan, who is also dressed in the green robes of a Slytherin student.*

Rowan: It's fantastic to see you again, Emma. I'm so happy we both got put in Slytherin. Would you like to hear an exhaustive history of our house, including a comprehensive biography of our house founder?

Emma: For now, let's just take it all in...

*The pair look around the Common Room. Two students are sitting on a couch, eating sweets that make them float. Felix Rosier, the Slytherin Prefect, is sitting round a large table with other students. He casts a spell on a hopping frog which suddenly starts to float through the air. This impresses several students like Barnaby Lee and Elora Dunn, who give him a round of applause.*
