chapter three .. jealousy jealousy
...
KAIA SAT QUIETLY next to conrad on the bench, her fingers tangled together in her lap. she kept her eyes glued to the floor
"officers, thank you. it won't happen again, i can promise you that much" laurel said to the cops, her arms crossed
one of the officers, the male one, gave a small nod. "tell mr. fisher chief wants to set up a tea time when he gets back in town"
she nodded, "absolutely!" she paused, "sorry again for all the trouble"
laurel opened the door, letting the officers out. "have a good night," she called after them, then closed the door behind her. she turned around slowly, looking at the group with her jaw tight. laurel was pissed
"how could you guys be so irresponsible?" she scolded the whole group
"mom, it wasn't a big deal. seriously the cops were just looking to break up the bonfire" steven said, trying to downplay the situation
"not a big deal?" she snapped back
"yes!"
"i would say getting picked up by the cops for underaged drinking is a pretty big deal, steven" she retorted
kaia swallowed hard. she hated it when laurel was mad. she kept her head down, wishing she were anywhere else
steven began to sniff, "were you guys smoking tonight?"
"what?" laurel asked, seeming genuinely shocked by his question. "keep your voice down!" she hissed. "susannah is asleep on the couch!"
"what? i wasn't yelling? you you you were-" steven stammered in disbelief
"just so you know laurel, i- i didn't drink tonight i was the dd, i swear" jeremiah interjected
laurels eyes narrowed as she turned to conrad, "you're the oldest, what the hell has gotten into you?"
conrad didn't answer. he stared at the floor, his jaw clenched
her gaze shifted towards kaia, and then to belly, "when did you two leave the house and what the hell are you wearing?"
kaia finally looked up at laurel, "the dress is mine laurel, sorry"
"and why are we the only ones not allowed to leave the house?" belly asked
"it's not you're not allowed," laurel snapped. "its you should've told us you were going! how did you even get there?"
"we walked" kaia mumbled, her voice just above a whisper
her face hardened, "jesus! you know better than to walk that far down the beach alone late at night!"
"can you stop treating me like a kid?" belly said sharply
"if you wanna be treated like an adult, you need to act like one" laurel shot back
