chapter three .. jealousy jealousy

...

kaia sat quietly next to conrad on the bench, steven looking down at her, she kept her eyes glued to the floor

"officers, thank you. it won't happen again, i can promise you that much" laurel says to the cops, her arms crossed

"tell mr. fisher chief wants to set up a tea time when he gets back in town" the male cop says to laurel

she nods, "absolutely!" she pauses, "sorry again for all the trouble" she opens the door for the officers, "have a good night, officers" she says

she closes the door and then turns around back towards the group, kaia looks up her, nervous for what laurel was going to say, she was clearly pissed

"how could you guys be so irresponsible?" she scolded the whole group

"mom, it wasn't a big deal. seriously the cops were just looking to break up the bonfire" steven says, trying to downplay the situation

"not a big deal?" she snaps back

"yes!"

"i would say getting picked up by the cops for underaged drinking is a pretty big deal steven" she retorted

kaia was genuinely terrified around laurel when she was upset, she kept her head down and refused to make eye contact with anyone

steven begins to sniff, "were you guys smoking tonight?"

"what?"

"keep your voice down! susannah is asleep on the couch!"

"what? i wasn't yelling? you you you were-" he stammered in disbelief

"just so you know laurel, i- i didn't drink tonight i was the dd, i swear" jeremiah interjected

laurels eyes narrowed as she turned to conrad, "you're the oldest, what the hell has gotten into you?"

her gaze shifts towards kaia and then to belly, "when did you two leave the house and what the hell are you wearing?"

kaia finally looks up at laurel, "the dress is mine laurel, sorry"

"and why are we the only ones not allowed to leave the house?" belly retorts

"it's not you're not allowed its you should've told us you were going! how did you even get there?" laurel questions

"we walked" kaia mumbled, her voice just above a whisper

"jesus! you know better than to walk that far down the beach alone late at night!"

"can you stop treating me like a kid?" belly responds

"if you wanna be treated like an adult, you need to act like one" laurel snapped
