"Wake up."

Kai's soft voice roused you from your sleep, but you barely had the energy to respond. After yesterday's whirlwind of emotions and revelations, your mind felt like a tangled mess. The news that Veneer and possibly Velvet were alive had left you reeling. The events of last night replayed endlessly in your head, making it hard to move. Kai's voice grew a bit louder but stayed gentle.

"Y/N, are you awake?"

Groggily, you opened your eyes, barely recognizing your disheveled reflection.

"Yeah," you croaked, your voice hoarse. "Glass of water, please."

Kai teased, "Your voice sounds worse than mine after a night out. Sure thing."

"Ugh, what time is it?" you asked, struggling to clear the fog from your mind.

Hunter chimed in from the doorway, "6:00. Get up, we're going to be late for work."

His presence only added to your irritation. "Why did you guys have to wake me up so early? Can't we go later?"

"Celeb duties, y'know?" Hunter explained. "Plus, we need to talk about why you came so late last night. You said you'd be here by 9, but you ended up taking more than an hour."

"Well, I got a little lost, I guess..." You hesitated. "And the car broke down."

You glanced at Hunter, who seemed skeptical. Kai offered a simple suggestion, "Why didn't you give us a call? I don't mind picking you up. It's not a long drive."

Your nerves were frayed. "Oh, um—I took a cab," you said, smoothing your ruffled hair.

Hunter's suspicion grew. "A cab? You got lost in a cab?"

You tried to sound reasonable. "It's hard to find a cab in my district, okay?"

Hunter opened his mouth to argue, but Kai placed a hand on his shoulder, a silent warning. "She's tired, man. Let's drop it. We have enough to deal with today."

Hunter didn't look happy but relented with a sigh. "Fine. Just get dressed. We can't be late." He tossed some clothes onto your bed before walking out.

"Sorry, he just gets a little too nosy sometimes. You get ready; we'll be waiting outside, okay?"

You nodded, giving him a reassuring smile. He left the room, locking the door behind him. You groaned, burying your face in the pillows. Thinking about Hunter only made you more irritated.

"And, this is why he gets no bitches," you muttered under your breath. You glanced at the clothes he'd thrown — a blazer with diamond buttons, a plain white top, and jeans. The blazer was far from your style, the buttons gleaming in a way that felt obnoxious. Still, it was better than arguing with Hunter again. You quickly changed, throwing on a jacket to tone down the look.
