I hope everyone's having a good summer! This heat is frying me LOL.

Sunlight is entering through the cracks of Easton's blinds when my eyes blink open. A ringing noise is coming from somewhere as I sit up, cradling the sides of my head at the pounding in my skull.

I groan, rubbing my eyes and then look around the room, seeing my phone vibrating on the bedside table. I pick it up to see that it's eleven p.m and my sister is calling me. Shit. I've slept way too long. Longer than I was meant to. I let my sister go to voicemail and cringe at the amount of missed calls. Three from my sister and two from Ace.

     They're going to kill me.

I let my phone slip from my hand onto the bed as I listen for any other noise but the apartment is completely silent. Easton must still be asleep.

I quietly sneak around the bedroom, picking up my clothes from the floor and get back into my dress and panties from last night. I catch my reflection in Easton's mirror on the way to his door and I'm a mess. My hair is in disarray and my dress is all crinkled. I can't fix it now so crazy girl look will have to make do.

I dial a taxi and the dispatcher tells me it will be five minutes.

My heart is racing when I leave the bedroom. I can't let Easton catch me sneaking off like the coward I am. I won't live through the embarrassment. From the hallway I can see he's still fast asleep on the sofa with the blanket covering his face and his arm cradling the back of his head. Rex is curled up at his feet but when I walk into the living room, he lifts his head and looks at me.

"Shhh." I give the dog my pleading eyes, praying he can break the communication barrier and know that I need him to stay quiet. A whine comes up his throat and I panic. Without thinking, I run to the front door, fiddling with the lock and then yank it wide open.

Rex jumps of the sofa barking and I hear Easton say, "What's the matter, boy?", before the door closes loudly behind me. I know he heard that.

Jogging down the stairway instead of risking the elevator, I bump into Phil at the bottom. His kind blue eyes take me in from my messy hair to my crinkled dress and he looks at me with sympathy. "Let me guess, Easton doesn't know you've left?"

"I- er—" I stammered, feeling really embarrassed. "Could you let me out? I called a taxi."

"Sure." He opens the door for me but not without asking, "May I ask why you're running away?"

I look at Phil and something about his kind, older face has me being honest. "I'm afraid. My life is a mess and I can't afford to make more bad decisions."

Phil processes what I said and replies with, "We've all been there. Easton's a good guy but he is mixed up in some bad shit. You didn't hear that from me. Just take care of yourself and who knows, I might see you again." He smiles like he knows for sure I'll be back. Will I?

My taxi pulls up outside and bibs at me. I give Phil a smile. "Thanks, goodbye."

I know Easton's mixed in some illegal activity, I've seen and heard the evidence at the car meet but hearing someone else say it just reaffirms it in my head.
