"Marry me, Scarl."
I was too shocked to say anything. I just stared at him, too stunned to utter a single word. I found myself lost in the depth of his blinding galaxies. The thumping of harsh raindrops on his tinted windows synchronized with the rush of my heartbeat. At that moment, a part of me was screaming, yearning for him. It finally felt like the incomplete part of me, the pieces that always felt so fragmented, had found its key to completion.
Ah, is that it? No matter how much I physically resisted, I would only feel like myself with him by my side. Just a phrase—a single phrase that gave me the assurance he would be by my side—was enough. That's all it took. I had been helplessly waiting for this all along.
"Ah, honestly Scarl, my months' worth of preparation just sank down the Han River." Jungkook heaved a big sigh of disappointment, and I still kept my eyes on him. He gripped my hands tighter, showing no hint of letting go. "It wasn't supposed to be like this. I rented out a fine dining yacht. I should have come clean with you there and proposed properly."
He then muttered under his breath, almost too softly to hear, "I even prepared a ring."
"..."
"Now, Scarl, please don't do this to me." There was a bead of sweat on his face; I swear he looked more panicked than when he was chasing after me. "Aren't you going to give me your response?"
"..."
"Scarl, you can talk now!" He looked deeply into my eyes, desperation evident as he inched closer. "You can talk now; I took back my order to have you stay silent."
I was trying to hold them back. I was trying my best to hold back this tears of mine from pooling in my eyes, but the burning of my nose and the lump forming in my throat were clear signs of my miserable failure as I turned my head away from his gaze.
"The proposal was supposed to be my last straw," he admitted, his voice hoarded with heavy emotions yet those reassuring smile remained on his face. "I already prepared myself for your rejection. You shouldn't feel pressured to answer me, Scarl. Whatever your answer is, I will take everything to heart."
I returned my gaze to his brownish galaxies shimmering in his hopeful eyes, "D-did I somehow just ruin this?"
"You haven't ." He said, but then he quickly added, "I mean, it may depend on whether you accept it or not." He raised our joined hands to his chin level, his eyes staying glued to mine.
"Scarlet An—no. Let me say that again." He stopped himself, for a moment there my eyebrows slightly tilted. I unexpectedly waited for his next moves. He then cleared his throat, "Yoon Jaehwa, will you marry me?"
"But I don't like that name." I admitted, sighing under my breath.
"Then, Scarlet Anderson! The most beautiful woman I have ever laid my eyes on, the one I want nothing more than to kiss the life out of, the most important person I swear to protect and cherish for the rest of my life, my best friend whom I wouldn't trade for anything in the world, the love of my life, will you give me the honor of making you my most beloved wife?"
"If you can grant me one more promise, then I might consider marrying you." I tried pulling my hands away but he firmly held them tighter.
"Anything."
I looked into his eyes, our eyes locked as I was held hostage in those brown eyes yet again. "Please.. don't disappear on me. No matter what problems we may encounter, promise you will share them with me."
His eyes softened, the tension on his lips stretched into a gentle smile. Before I knew it, he had draped his arms around me, pulling me into his warm embrace. His chin rested on my hair as he gently caressed my hair and I found myself once again turning into a crying mess the moment his warmth enveloped me.
