"You are on my throne, Idril," the smooth voice of King Thranduil sounded, making my eyes flutter open to see the elf king staring at me from the steps. "Perhaps if his highness had been here when he said he would, I wouldn't have needed to rest," I shot back, pushing to my feet as he ascended the rest of the steps to the golden throne. "My, my, my. Someone seems to have forgotten who she is talking to." the male tsked as he took the seat I had just vacated. "You requested me in the throne room three hours ago." I snapped, crossing my arms over my chest and pushing the raised mounds even higher. I inwardly danced in victory as the shining blue eyes darted straight to the pale flesh popping from the top of my corset, his hands gripping the arms of his throne just a bit tighter. "I am the King Idril; I will keep you waiting for three days if I please," he shot back, fingers tapping gently at the gold beneath his hands. "What did you want with me?" I asked, curious since his guard approached me with his request. "Father, you asked to see me?" Legolas's voice interrupted what the king was about to say, turning to see him looking between us in confusion. "Leave us, Idril. I have more important business to attend to," Thranduil drawled his eyes on the new arrival. "More important business than whatever you had me get all dressed up and waiting all day for?" I snapped, glaring at him. "Leave." the elf king snarled, eyes flashing darkly. Grumbling quietly to myself, I spun on my heel and stomped off. Rolling my eyes at Thranduil and myself, I stormed to my bedroom, ripping the corset and dress from my body and replacing it with a soft robe. I had spent the better part of my morning getting my hair and clothes perfect for council with the king, and he had just forgotten about me and, when he did show up, turned me away like it was nothing.

As the days passed, my disillusionment with the king grew. I had been in the palace of Greenwood for two moons, yet I was no closer to bonding with the king than when I had first arrived. The feeling of disappointment was becoming more challenging to shake. He would request my presence only to act as if I wasn't even in the room. One day, I stood at the side of his throne for nearly half the day in silence before he finally dismissed me as if my time was of no value. There were other instances as well; one moment, he'd want me near, and the next, it was as if I was an inconvenience to him. I didn't recall when I fell asleep, my thoughts spinning around the elven king as they had for much of my time since my father announced my future marriage to the greenwood elf. Even my dreams were haunted by the older male's white-blonde hair and ice-blue eyes. Thankfully, this dream remained kosher, unlike others, where I woke up soaked in sweat and needing to release myself.

I woke with a start as a knock sounded on the heavy wood door separating me from the rest of the palace. "Idril, my father wishes to see you in the throne room," Legolas sounded from the other side as I got to my feet. I pulled the robe back on and ensured I was proper before opening the door. "Tell your father if he wishes to speak with me; he can come to find me himself," I snorted, opening the door to look at the elf prince. I wasn't going to run to him every time he called if he was going just to push me away. "He said if you denied him, then to pack your bags, and you'd be escorted home in the morning," he sighed heavily, my heart dropping into my stomach. "Fine. Then I suppose I'd better start packing. I assume we'll be leaving early." I nodded, watching him nod once and leave, shutting the wooden door once he was out of sight. I was a fool; I should have known that coming here would lead to nothing but heartache and resentment. I had told my father I would have better luck with the prince, but he said if I did not wed King Thranduil, I would not wed anyone of Greenwood. Perhaps it was better this way. I did not want to live a life of misery where my husband wanted nothing to do with me. I could not stop my tears as I packed the few things I had brought, leaving the dresses and jewelry provided to me during my time here in their places. When all was said and done, I had the single pack I had arrived with ready and waiting near the door, a pair of trousers, boots, a tunic, corset, and cloak waiting neatly beside it. With everything prepared for my departure the following morning, I slipped back into bed and let my tears put me to sleep.

When I woke again, it was with a heavy heart. My eyes and heart ached. Trying not to linger, I quickly dressed and plaited my hair, tying off the braids just as a knock sounded. "Are you ready, Lady Idril?" a guard questioned as I opened the door. "Yes, I just need to grab my pack." I nodded, picked up the bag, and followed him out and down the hall. I kept my face blank as we approached Legolas and Thranduil waiting at the gates; I knew it was not to bid me farewell but to ensure I left. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Prince Legolas," I whispered, bowing lowly before the elf prince. The pleasure was mine, Lady Idril. Perhaps we will see each other again," he sighed, pressing his lips to my hand before returning to his duties. "I have sent word to your father about your return; he expects you." King Thranduil stated, showing no emotion that he was upset or even glad of my leaving. "Thank you for your hospitality and for allowing me to stay in your home," I murmured before turning on my heel and starting the journey back to Lindon. Six days later, we were entering the lands of Lindon, the comfort of my home washing over me as soon as we crossed the river. "Idril, my darling, I did not expect to see you," my father crowed as I walked into his throne room, Thranduil's words that he had warned my father of my return bouncing through my head. "I missed you, Ada," I sighed, hugging the man tightly. The comment seemed safe since I had no idea what was happening if he did not know I was coming back. "I missed you too, my darling. Why don't you go clean up and rest, and I will get the kitchen started on a meal for us, and you can tell me all about the greenwood" he grinned, kissing my temple before we parted ways.

The first thing I noticed upon entering my room was a beautiful gold envelope placed on my pillow. Dropping my pack to the floor, I picked up the envelope and pulled out the parchment inside. My eyes scanned the letter quickly, and my heart thundered in my chest as I read the words over and over. I had no idea what was happening or what to expect with this information.

Dear Idril,

If you are reading this, then you've returned to Lindon. I am not one to let my property go so easily. I will allow you several days to throw your tantrum, then you will be retrieved and returned to me promptly. Should you try to run or hide, your punishment will be even more severe; I can and will have you found and brought back.

You wanted my attention; now you have it. I will show you the monster you've created.

The clock is ticking.
