The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the Kim Mansion in a soft twilight glow. Inside the vast library, Jisoo was seated at a large mahogany desk, engrossed in a thick book. The library was one of the few places where she could find solitude and escape the constant pressures of her family's expectations.
The door creaked open, and Jennie strolled in, her eyes scanning the rows of books before settling on her sister. With a mischievous grin, she walked over and leaned against the desk.
"Still buried in books, I see," Jennie said, her tone light but with an edge of curiosity.
Jisoo barely glanced up from her book. "What do you want, Jennie?"
Jennie crossed her arms, watching her sister intently. "I wanted to talk about the new maid, Chaeyoung."
Jisoo’s eyes flicked up to meet Jennie's, but she quickly returned to her book. "What about her?"
"She seems nice," Jennie continued. "Kind, even. I’ve heard nothing but good things from the staff."
Jisoo’s grip on the book tightened slightly. "She's just a maid, Jennie."
Jennie raised an eyebrow. "Just a maid? You seemed pretty friendly with her in the garden."
Jisoo sighed, her patience wearing thin. "It’s nothing. We were just talking."
Jennie smirked and picked up another book from the desk, tossing it casually behind her. "Sure, just talking. I know you, Jisoo. I know you see something different in her. But don’t do anything stupid."
Jisoo stood up, facing Jennie with a cold expression. "Nothing is going on or will happen with Chaeyoung. She’s just a maid."
Jennie's eyes narrowed. "You’re heartless, you know that? Just because she’s a maid doesn’t mean she’s any less of a person."
Jisoo’s face remained impassive. "You and I will never see eye to eye on this, Jennie. She’s here to work, not to be part of our lives."
"Bullshit, you two danced and even left the party! Deny all you want but you know I'm right." Jennie challenged.
With that, Jisoo brushed past Jennie, leaving the library with a heavy sigh. Jennie watched her go, frustration and sadness mingling in her eyes. She knew the pressure on Jisoo to marry and maintain their family's status was immense, but it hurt to see her sister so closed off.
Jennie lingered in the library for a moment, trying to calm her thoughts. As she exited, she spotted Chaeyoung crossing the hall with Lisa. The two women were chatting animatedly, their laughter echoing softly in the grand space.
Jennie sighed, her gaze following them. She glanced up and noticed her mother standing at the top of the stairs, her expression unreadable as she looked down the hall, not directly at Jennie but aware of everything.
Jennie’s heart ached with the weight of her family's expectations and the growing tension between her and Jisoo. She knew her sister was struggling, and she hoped that somehow, they could find common ground before it was too late. But for now, all she could do was watch and wait, hoping that the new maid, Chaeyoung, might bring a change to the rigid world of the Kim family.
