CHAPTER 2: BIRTHDAY PREP

Previously:

Selene's expression softened slightly, grateful for his support. "Thank you, and you're right we'll leave the day after tomorrow. I know it's a lot to ask, but we have to protect her. We have to protect our family."

Lucas gently stroked Selene's hair, trying to offer comfort despite the fear gripping him. "We will. I promise. We'll do whatever it takes to keep Astrid safe."

As they prepared for the uncertain journey ahead, the weight of their responsibility loomed over their heads. The future was fraught with danger and uncertainty, but their resolve was firm. They would do everything in their power to ensure that their daughter's destiny was one of hope and safety, not destruction.

***********************************************************************************************

It's been 17 years since that day and Astrid is now a week away from her 18th birthday. On that day she'll finally be a full-fledged witch, and the rest of her powers will be unleashed. She's already as powerful as the witch Celest recorded in the tomes and grimoire that her mother gave her, so she was very nervous to receive the rest of her powers.

When she was 10 years old her mother told her about the prophecy and that she was destined to either bless or destroy the world. Ever since that day, she's been so frightened about the covens coming for her, and if she really would bring the end of the world as they know it. She shakes her head and takes a deep breath. Nothing bad has happened in the past 17 years, so she shouldn't be worrying about it now.

Fear is her downfall. If she succumbs to paranoia and fear she will lose control and that is how she will bring the end of the world. She found out that little nugget when she was 11 years old and she got lost in the mall. She had gone to look at the stuffed animals on the wall and when she looked behind her her mother was nowhere to be seen.

Fear and the unknown started to grip her heart. Thoughts of being abandoned or worse the coven having taken her mother ate away at her mind. Panic flooded her veins and her power burst forth from her like a dam giving way to water. Everyone in her vicinity collapsed to the ground coughing up blood and passing out.

Eventually, her mother found her before anyone was seriously injured past the point of no return. Even while she was still so young her mother struggled to contain her power and calm her down. Selene was not weak by any means it was just that her daughter was that powerful and those powers were growing far too fast. In the future, Selene knew that she wouldn't be able to subdue her anymore so her control over her powers was more prevalent than ever before.

After her mother helped her regain control she healed the injured humans and she erased their minds of us being there. She then whipped the security feed and transported us back to our home. The following day and every day after that we would do drills on how to manage my fear.

Astrid POV

Now at 17 years old, there was little I was afraid of. Heights, nope. Snakes, nah. Tight spaces yawn. Anything that could possibly cause me to become afraid I had it trained right out of me. Of course, some things you can never really not be afraid of. Like, losing my family, the fact that I can destroy the world in the blink of an eye, or the constant looking over my shoulder to see if the coven has found out about me. Those are some fears that I haven't and probably would never become immune to. But my mom says that's okay.

She told me, "Everyone has something they are afraid of. "You can't change the direction of the wind but you can adjust your sails." We all have our fears, but it's how we choose to react to those fears that can affect the outcome. "
