Dakota's POV

"When it's your turn, state your first and last name and say something about yourself." The teacher says. "As an example, I'll start us off."

He leads off by grabbing a pen from the bottom of the whiteboard and starts writing on it, spelling out a name.

"My name is Thomas Walter and this is my first time teaching my own class. I look forward to being with you all!"

His smile moves to one of the people in front of me, most likely telling them to continue on.

The graveyard girl starts talking. "Ashlyn Banner, I like dogs." She says with about as much enthusiasm as I plan to use.

The boy next to her, Aiden, then continuing. "I'm Aiden clark, I like bungee jumping, skydiving, rock climbing, racing, water skiing-"

It feels like the boy goes on for and eternity before the teacher moves on to the next person.

Ben.

While the teacher looks to be waiting, Ben has his head down on the desk and doesn't say a word. Aiden than speaks up.

"Oh, yeah! That's Ben Clark, my cousin. And he doesn't talk to people!"

Doesn't talk? He just fulling doesn't talk at all? This boy gets more intriguing by the minute.

I'm pulled out of my thoughts by a cough from the teacher.

Shit! My turn.

I put on the fakest smile I could, looking straight at the teacher. "Dakota Campbell. And I am just so happy to be here."

The sarcasm from my tone radiates as the teachers nods, looking kinda sad, and moves on.

Oops?

"Hello, I-the-uh... Logan Fields." A boy with round-edged glasses fumbles over his words. "I mean I'm Logan... I um, I enjoy astrology."

"I'm Taylor Hernandez!" One of the twins speaks up in an inviting voice. "I'm in the mechanics club. Come say hi if you get the chance."

The other twin then speaks up right after her. "I'm Tyler Hernandez, yes, we're twins." He says, sounding very enthusiastic. "I'm in the baseball club."

The rest of the class then go, everyone saying something that is slightly interesting but not worth thinking or asking about.

"Alright, now that introductions are done," Mr Walter speaks up ad the last person sits down. "Let's talk about the semester-long group project!"

I'm sorry, WHAT?

"Today you'll be choosing your group partners for the project and each group should consist of seven people each."

I have to do a project with six randos?

FOR THE WHOLE SEMESTER?!

Well maybe-

My thoughts get cut off by Mr Walter speaking again, "Oh, and no one will be allowed to work alone."

Fuck.

He assigns us our groups and tells us to move around as the rest of this class is going to be on what our project will be about.

I look around at my group, assessing everyones personality.

The ginger girl, Ashlyn, that I through under the bus is sat with her feet on her chair, head buried in her knees.

The loner.

Next to her on her left is one of the twins, Taylor, who looks perfectly happy and comfortable.

The popular girl.

Then on her side is her twin, Tyler, looking like he hates everyone here, valid, and that he thinks that, by how he's sat, he can get away with not actually doing a lot.

The popular boy.

On his left, and my right, is the quiet boy with glasses and a stutter, Logan, sat with good posture in his chair and looks like he's already got about five ideas on what we should do for this project.

The nerd.

Then on my left is sat the interesting boy from the bus, Ben, who still hasn't spoken and is sat there with his eyes closed.

The mute.

And, finally, on Ben's left is his cousin, Aiden, sat there with a smirk and curious eyes wondering the classroom, looking like he hasn't sat still a day in his life.

The class clown.

Once the teacher had finishes babbling on about this project I lay my head down on the desk, facing my right.

As I lay my head down I catch the eye of the boy on that side, looking down at me.

As I make eye contact with Ben we sit and look at each other for only a minute.

He smiles at me.

For the first time since I'd met him like 2 hours ago, he hasn't looked away from me as quickly as he could.

He kept looking at me and he smiled.

I smiled back at him.

Maybe this project won't be the worst thing ever.

"Additionally, there is an overnight field trip to go along with the project!"

A trip?

This comment catches my attention as I look away from Ben and towards the teacher.

"Of course it's optional, however those who attend can get extra credit for your individual grade."

This sounds like something I could get behind.

"If you are interested, the permission slips are on my desk and include everything you'll need to know."

I look over to him desk to see a pile of pink permission slips.

"For the rest of the period, please choose what topic your group would like to present on. You've got twenty-five minutes so spend it wisely."

Well this class has gone quite quick.

For the next twenty-five minutes, the group chat about different ideas, mainly Logan bringing up new things, thinking about what topic we should choose.

These few minutes go very quickly as the next thing I know the bell is ringing and I'm grabbing my bag to leave the room.

"Don't forget to have the slips signed and bring them back on Monday." The teacher says.

I look at the slips again, grabbing one and putting it in my pocket. I turn around and find Aiden and Ashlyn talking, Ben just stood, seemingly waiting for the blonde boy, a foot or so behind him.

This is going to be a really long year, I can already tell.
