As dawn approached, the forest slowly awoke, bathed in the soft glow of early morning light. The trio of wolves, exhausted from their first transformation, lay in a huddled group in the clearing. The warmth of their combined bodies provided a measure of comfort as they drifted in and out of sleep.
Liana was the first to stir. The weight of the previous night's revelations pressed heavily upon her. She nudged Marcus and Elena awake, her eyes reflecting a mix of determination and worry.
"We need to get back to town," Liana said, her voice low but urgent. "We can't stay here. Our parents will notice we're missing."
Marcus, still groggy, stretched and yawned. "We've barely scratched the surface of what happened last night. Are we sure we're ready for this?"
Elena, who had been silently watching the sunrise, finally spoke. "Ready or not, we have to face it. We can't hide from what we are."
They began their trek back to Lupine Ridge, their wolf forms moving swiftly through the forest. The transition from the wild to the human world was jarring, but the bond they shared made it easier to bear. When they reached the edge of town, they shifted back into their human forms, their clothes magically reappearing from the transformation.
The familiar sights of Lupine Ridge greeted them, but the sense of normalcy was now tainted by the knowledge of their new identities. They headed to their respective homes, agreeing to meet later to discuss their next steps.
As Liana walked through the town square, she noticed a subtle shift in the atmosphere. Whispers and glances seemed to follow her every move. She tried to ignore them, but the feeling of being watched was unsettling.
As she entered her house, she was met by her mother, who was clearly concerned. "Liana, where have you been? You missed dinner, and your father's worried."
"Just out with my friends," Liana said, trying to sound casual. "I lost track of time."
Her mother's eyes narrowed, but she didn't press further. "Well, you should be more careful. People have been talking about strange things happening in the forest."
Liana's heart skipped a beat. "What kind of things?"
Her mother hesitated, then said, "People say they've heard strange noises and seen odd lights. They're spooked."
Liana forced a smile and nodded. "I'll be more careful."
After dinner, she met Marcus and Elena at their usual spot in the park. They exchanged nervous glances, each lost in their own thoughts.
