Amongst the beginnings of twilight stood a fox called Midnight.
No. I'm just imagining. He's not really there, Melodi thought. The zorua, Midnight, held her gaze. His eyes seemed to have an icy grasp on her soul.
She waved her paw in the air and swiped his snout. She was begging to the Tapu's that he wasn't real. Alas, rather than her paw going through him, she ended up holding his muzzle with her paw.
A crooked smirk twisted across the fox's snout. "Ah, so you did miss me."
Melodi gasped and immediately withdrew her paw. "No! What is wrong with you?" She hissed. "You betray me and have the audacity to follow me? To see me again?"
Midnight edged closer. His breath smelled like familiar and it caused Melodi to hold back a gag. Oh right, it was the awful, powerful smell of ash, death, and decay. It was so strong, even Melodi's poor sense of smell could pick it up. Dang, he sure does know how to take care of himself, don't he?
"Everything is wrong with me, Melodi," Midnight whispered. A saddened look suddenly fell across his face. He dropped his gaze and looked intently to his paws. "In fact, I didn't come to seek your forgiveness."
Guilt washed over Melodi. How couldI have been so quick to judge? What if something bad happened and he wants help? She thumped her tail hard on the ground. No! What am I thinking? He betrayed me. He abandoned me when I needed him most.
She moved her head to the right and stubbornly closed her eyes. "Then why are you here? Because to me, it looks like you followed me," she said.
Midnight let out a long, exasperated sigh. "My family was killed in a horrible fire," he replied. Little tears slid down his face as he looked up. "It was terrifying! One moment, we were all smiling, the next, he came and swooped them up." His voice lowered and he added, "and he dropped them in the crackling flames."
Melodi's heart dropped, as well as her ears. She turned her head to observe him. She didn't know how to reply. Her own memories flickered in her head. Flames of sadness sparked as the images of her family came one by one. They'regone. Gone. Gone. Gone.
Midnight brought her back to reality. "I came here because my cousin lives here," he stated. "He's all I have left . . ."
Melodi took a step back. Her heart raced and anxiety prickled at her paws. She didn't know whether to believe him or not, because it looked like to her he had the same exact story as her, except for the cousin part. "Well, I can't do anything for you! Go and leave me alone!" She blurted. "It sucks that you're all alone but leave me out of your misery."
