My Most Dear Célestin,
For several days now, I have received no news from you, and it concerns me greatly. Have you fallen ill during my absence? Or have you encountered some unfortunate misadventure? Could you please respond at your earliest convenience? Although your letter may not reach me for several days due to the great distance that separates us, I shall await it with the utmost anxiety.
I yearn to return to the Court, notwithstanding that His Majesty the King prefers me to serve as the ambassador of the Court in his stead in this distant land. Had you been able to come, you would have witnessed for yourself the divine beauty of this country. I do not wield words as deftly as you do, my dear, and thus this letter may appear rather insipid in comparison to your brilliant fables. Have I ever told you how elegant your writing is? Perhaps not sufficiently, given this silence. It pains me that you might ignore me; could you at least have the courtesy to inform me of what displeases you about me?
Perhaps, my dear, you would like me to bring you some presents? If that might encourage you to write to me. The other day, I spotted a feather of great fineness, its azure hue reminiscent of your remarkable eyes. Unless you would prefer the sumptuous silks and embroidery, in harmony with your silky hair, offered by the merchants? If you continue to disregard me, I fear I may find myself purchasing every fanciful and delightful item I encounter in hopes of pleasing you.
I am lost in my own thoughts and often given to dreaming. More than anything, I wish to return to the Court. The anticipation of returning overwhelms me, my dearest friend, though I find myself compelled to exercise great patience.
I miss you terribly, and my ink runs dry as I do upon this letter, while fear grips my heart at the thought that your reply may never reach me.
Take care of yourself, my dearest, and I hope to hear from you soon.
With all my sincerest affections,
Gabriel
