Finch basically falls 30 feet and lands flat on her face in her hurry to get down.
"Are you okay, Thresh? what happened?" She asks, ignoring the stream of blood gushing from her face.
"Like you suddenly care," replies Thresh under his breath.
"Uuuggghhh! What do I have to do to show that I'm on your side?!" Finch snaps.
I run between them before they can start fighting.
"Thresh, quit it. finch, calm down. What happened to you?"
"The boy from 10," starts Thresh, "had the cowardly idea to attack me while I slept, almost killing me. but... well, you heard the cannon."
"Are you wounded?" I ask him
He has several cuts on his face, but they can be cured with some medical herbs I can find around. No herb can help the long cut on his arm though; it literally goes from his shoulder to forearm. It's a miracle he hasn't bled to death. Finch is back up in the tree, rummaging through our first aid kits. She takes out a bandage roll and tosses it down to me. When I am done with Thresh's arm, I notice he's still limping.
"I think I sprained my ankle," he says, like it's no big deal.
"Compression bandage!" Finch shouts from the tree and tosses it down to us.
When I finish wrapping it around his ankle, he looks a bit better, less pale.
"What about some breakfast?" Finch asks from above and brings out one of her exquisite Capitol dishes, noodles and green sauce.
I find and wash some Flat Rocks, and she splits the noodles equally between us three. The noodles are still warm, and there's a bit less tension between Finch and Thresh. He even gives her a bit of his portion.
"Where do you think Cato is?" I asked them, since it's a big arena and the game makers will want their bloody finale.
"The Lake," Thresh answers immediately.
Finch nods but doesn't reply.
"What about you, Foxface?" He asks her,
She laughs, a dark laugh filled with sarcasm. "You want my opinion?"
"As crazy as it may seem, yes."
"I don't think he's in the lake. Everyone in this arena knows the career base camp is there. He fears you, so I'm saying he'll be somewhere near the forest or the stream."
"So that's where we have to go." He says more to himself than to anyone else.
"Are you out of your mind?!" I ask him, "You're hurt! You can't go stumbling into a fight with Cato!
"Rue's right." Finch agrees, "At least give yourself some time to heal."
"I'd love to! The only problem is, we don't have a couple of days!" He snaps, "We have until the game makers say this is way too boring!"
"Calm down, Thresh; you killed Timmer barely hours ago. I think we'll have at least until tomorrow; try and rest for now." says Finch with patience.
"I can work with that," Thresh gives in.
Only he doesn't. He climbs, runs, and trains, continuously ignoring our warnings.
Other than that, the day goes by fairly quickly. and before any of us know it, it's sundown. Thresh decides to set his camp on a clearing near ours, and me and Finch go back to our tree, only to be attacked by a sudden downpour. Thank goodness our sleeping bags are waterproof. We position a sheet of plastic we found in Katniss's pack to block the rain from our faces. Now no rain is reaching us. Cato probably has a tent or sleeping bag of his own, so I have no idea what brought on the storm. Maybe it isn't a gamemaker's storm.
●●●
I'm falling, not from the tree but into an endless void of desperation. Katniss's voice blooms around me, screaming two words repeatedly. your fault! I see Clove, her skull smashed, bloody, Cato screaming for her, and things that I fear deep, deep down. Finch collapsed on the ground, bled white, dead. thresh, fighting with Cato, losing, dying, and me alone. I wake up screaming and terrified.
"Rue! What's wrong?" asks Finch, startled.
"Just a nightmare. I'm fine."
but I'm not fine. What will be with me if I go back home? having seen what I've seen, having lost allies, friends. And finally, only one of us will go home; both of us can't win this game; one of us will have to die.
