The ring had been purchased: a beautiful silver band, encrusted with tiny diamonds and y/n's birthstone in the center. It was lovely, it was expensive and it made everything feel very very real for Tamaki. He was really going to do it.

He was going to ask the love of his life to marry him this month. You.

He felt a little delirious about it all, running to Mirio for help after a couple of his friends had told him to 'put a ring on it'. It was true, you and Tamaki had been dating for five years and you barely ever fought. There was no reason Tamaki shouldn't ask you to marry him. And so, he asked his sunshine best friend, Mirio, to help him choose a ring and pick the right location. The beach at sunset was decided after you mentioned that it was your idea of a perfect date and thus, the plan was in motion.

"Bunny, do you wanna get your nails done"? Tamaki is sitting on the couch, reading a New Yorker magazine as he asks. Your eyes shoot up from your phone. Holding one hand out in front of you, you examine your nails; trimmed and polishless. You could go for a manicure...but why was he asking?

"Sure Tama. But why"? You put down your phone to look at him closer. His eyes are glued to the magazine.

"J-just an early birthday gift for my girl", he says calmly, trying to tamp down the blush threatening to burst across his cheeks at the white lie.

"Mhm", you murmur, returning to your phone.

He was gonna propose. You knew it. Well, you thought you did. You cooperated and got your nails done a pretty light pink color and even picked out a nice dress for your next dinner date. But he didn't do it. The dinner was lovely, the stars were out, you had the privacy needed for a proposal from a shy boy. But there was no kneeling and no ring and somehow you actually felt relieved by the whole thing.

Because you weren't going to say yes.

You couldn't. You knew it made you an awful person. Who leads someone on for five years? A person who doesn't realize they're not in love until the subject of marriage comes up, that's who.

You had to break it off. But that night, when he didn't propose, you couldn't help but feel like you were in the clear. Maybe he wouldn't propose ever and just do the kind thing and fall out of love with you. Maybe the indigo-haired boy would break your heart before you had the chance to shatter his.

"Bunny"? He lies down next to you in bed watching you zone out, your eyes staring into the distance. "What are you thinking about"? His eyebrows are knit, hand reaching out to grab yours. You return to reality, tears pricking your eyes. Maybe you should just do it now.

"We need to talk". You chew the inside of your cheek. Tamaki's eyes soften. He's way too fucking innocent for this world, you think.

"Sure bunny. About what"? He turns on his side, using an elbow to prop himself up on the plush mattress.

"About...how great you look with your new haircut"! You bail out, running your fingers awkwardly through his hair. He smiles slightly at the compliment, wary. It's true, his new cut looks good but it's obvious, even to Tamaki, that you had planned to say something different. And as innocent as you thought he was, Tamaki knew that it was supposed to be something bad.
