I was alone, sitting with my back against the wall. Maverick and the sidekick had left hours ago. A plate of food was delivered, of which I had eaten some. If I was going to get out of here I had to keep up my strength.
I was tired and sore. The blistering on my arms still throbbed. I lay down and curled up into a ball, feeling more hopeless in the situation.
Would I ever get out of here? And what scared me more was what else they could do to me.
The cool air made me shiver slightly as I walked into a forest. The grass soft as I walked barefoot into the lush green forest. Birds chirped and as I looked up the sun began to set coloring the sky in shades of orange, pink and purple.
I breathed in the air as the forest began to darken. Fear of the thick darkness of the crowded trees should have kept me from going further but curiosity and something else I couldn't explain kept me on my path.
Just as I passed a the first few rows of trees small lights appeared in the air. Fireflies. They were beautiful. I reached out to touch one but it danced just out of my reach.
Deeper I walked, feeling more compelled to find what I was looking for, even if I had no idea what that was.
The fireflies disappeared leaving me in total darkness and silence. I noticed there was a deadly silence, nothing, no insects or animals. I couldn't help thinking that was strange.
The darkness was thick in the air. Every breath harder to take than before.
Amber eyes appeared a few meters in front of me and I faltered a step, feeling fear for the first time. The eyes that watch me were not natural, it made the hair on my arms stand up. It was something I should have feared, but didn't.
There was a deep growl from the animal that moved closer. I should have run as fast as I could but I didn't. I stood unmoving as a large wolf neared, growling to show is sharp teeth. Teeth that could easily rip my flesh from my bones.
It stopped a couple of feet from me. I reached out my hand and it slowly began to approach me. My hand shook slightly before making contact with its head. The growling stopped and it looked at me with its florescent amber eyes. Gone was the fear and in its place something else took hold.
A belonging I had been searching for for years settled inside me. The massive wolf watched me with eyes that seemed to see deeper into me, right down to my soul.
I bent down and encircled the neck of the wolf and hugged it.
I couldn't explain what I was feeling or my actions. It made absolutely no logical sense.
The wolf continued to stare at me while I embraced it. My cheek rested against its face.
Mine. I heard the word. I knew it was from the wild animal even if I couldn't explain how I knew that.
"Mine," I whispered in return.
Knowing it belonged to me like I belonged to it.
The wolf moved slightly and I would feel the fur disappear and I felt skin. Human skin. The shape of the animal I embraced changed. Strong male muscled arms embraced me back.
I moved back to see Maverick. His eyes still amber and wolf like as they held mine. There wasn't distrust or scorn in his eyes like I would have expected, instead there was possession.
"Mine," he breathed, huskily.
I moved to hold his face, in awe of the emotions I was feeling.
