Harry Styles as Troy Bolton: the most popular student at East High and the captain of the varsity basketball team. On New Year's Eve, after singing with Madison, he finds himself developing a crush on her.

Madison Beer as Gabriella Montez: a transfer student who joins the scholastic decathlon team and is attracted to Harry after meeting him at a New Year's Eve party.

Justin Timberlake as Chad Danforth: Harry's best friend, Liam's love interest, and very good friends with Cody and Shawn. He likes the status quo and later ends up dating Decathlon captain Liam.

Liam Payne as Taylor McKessie: Madison's friend, Justin's love interest, and very good friends with Selena and Becca. He is captain of the school's scholastic decathlon team, and despises the basketball players and cheerleaders, believing them to be airheads. although he later ends up going out with Justin.

Michael Clifford as Sharpay Evans: an energetic and proud student with a love of theatre and being the center of attention-particularly Harry's who employs her twin brother,

Zayn Malik as Ryan Evans: a member of the drama club who aids his twin sister, in sabotaging Madison's relationship with Harry.

Cody Simpson as Zeke Baylor: a member of the basketball team who enjoys baking and admires

Ashton Irwin as Jack Bolton: Harry's father and the coach of the basketball team who believes that Madison is a distraction from Harry's basketball career.

Diana Aragon as Lucille Bolton: Harry's mother and Ashton's wife. She is depicted as being somewhat annoyed with Harry and Ashton's extreme dedication to basketball.

BarbaraSieger5 as Kelsi Neilson: a friend of Madison and Liam and a student at East High School. She is a pianist and composer. She is very shy and is constantly bossed around by Michael, but in the end, she learns to stand up for herself and not get bossed around by Michael. She also enjoys composing and is an admirer of Zayn.

Shawn Mendes as Jason Cross: Selena's love interest, one of the jocks on the scholastic decathlon tram and plays for the basketball team. He also tends to ask mundane questions in Mr. Hemmings's class. He is good friends with Harry, Justin and Cody.

Selena Gomez as Martha Cox: a preppy brainiac who enjoys hip-hop. She is good friends with Madison, Liam and Becca.

Luke Hemmings as Ms. Darbus: the overly-dramatic musical director at East High. His classroom serves as a homeroom for Harry Irwin, Madison Tomlinson, Michael Malik, Zayn Malik, Justin Timberlake, Liam Payne, Becca Hood and other students. He has an intense dislike of cell phones, particularly when they ring in the theater. Him and coworkers Coach Ashton Irwin do not always see eye-to-eye.

Amber Riley as Ms. Tenny: a chemistry teacher at East High. Madison corrects the teacher's math equation on the board in Chem Class.

Louis Tomlinson as Lisa Montez: the single father of Madison. Madison has stated that she and her mother relocated several times. They move to Albuquerque halfway through Madison's junior year. and he promises Madison that it is a permanent arrangement until she graduates.

Lea Michele as Ms. Falstaff: the librarian at East High.

Heather Morris as Susan: a girl who unsuccessfully auditions for the winter musical.

Chord Overstreet as Alan: a boy who unsuccessfully auditions for the winter musical.
