Chapter 5
I sat watching Iroh as he played a game of pi sho with the crew, just as Zuko came into room and yelled, as always did.
" Who told you to change course, what is with this mutiny?" I quickly left the room before I was noticed. I had been avoiding Zuko as much as I could, because every time I was in the same room as him, it got awkward. I went out on deck and watched the waves.
A few hours later, I stood listening to Zuko yell about Aang getting away because we were wasting time looking for a lotus tile. I smirked watching as the firebenders carried all of the things, Iroh bought. I followed them onto a pirate ship and was just about to start looking around when Zuko got a lead on Aang.
I noticed the pirate watching me and I crossed my arms." What are you staring at?" I snapped and he smirked.
" Your the third water tribe member I've seen today, not going to steal from me too are you?"
" I've never stolen a thing in my life, and even if I did, it wouldn't be from thieves and people like you." We glared at each other before he started laughing.
" You know what kid, you've got guts, anyone else would have thrown you out." then with that he walked off.
We went back to the ship and took the smaller one along the river." Shouldn't we stop and search the trees?" The Captain asked
" They took a waterboarding scroll, right?" the captain nodded in response." Then they'll be along the water."
Night fell as we heard yelling." That's Katara" I mumbled and they stopped the boat, before going on land. A few minutes later they dragged Katara over and tied her to a tree.
Zuko tossed me the scroll and he started questioning Katara by using her necklace, until the captain interrupted" enough with this necklace garbage, we want our scroll." I raised an eyebrow before holding a small flame out under the scroll.
" From your reaction, I take it this is very expensive" I smirked and their eyes widened.
" Search the woods for the boy." Zuko told them and they walked off. When morning came, they returned with Aang and Sokka.
" Who's side are you on?" Sokka yelled at me and I rolled my eyes." I'm on no one's side but my own."
" Give me the boy."
" Give us the scroll." I looked down at the scroll in my hand and looked at Zuko.
" Your really going to hand over the Avatar for a stupid piece of parchment?" Sokka asked
" Don't listen to him, he's just trying to turn us against each other." But he ignored Zuko.
" Your friends the avatar?" The Pirate captain asked.
" Sure is. I bet he would fetch a lot more on the black market then some fancy scroll."
" Shut your mouth you filthy, water tribe, peasant"
" Hey!" I yelled but was ignored.
" Yeah, Sokka, you really should shut your mouth." Aang told him.
" I'm just saying, it's bad business sense, just think about how much the firelord would pay for two Avatars"
" Wait, two Avatars? Who is the second?"
I started whistling as Sokka looked at me.
" Two avatars, that's impossible."
" Guess the secrets out." I shrugged before raising my hand and creating a fireball.
" You'll regret breaking a deal with me." Zuko told him before we attacked the pirates. I ran over to Iroh just as both sides disappeared in a bunch of smoke.
I took up a defensive position as two pirates ran at me. I dodged them as they swung at me, kicking their swords into the air before knocking them off their feet. I looked over just in time to see both Zuko's boat and the pirate's boat go floating down the river.
The captain ran after his with Zuko right behind him, Iroh following behind. I chased after them and after awhile I caught up to them, looking up just as Zuko tossed Iroh's lotus tile over the waterfall. I rolled my eyes and shook my head, sighing.
Back on the ship, I sat meditating but looked up as the door opened." What do you want Zuko" I asked and he sighed." Why haven't you tried to escape, you've had a lot of opportunities to."
" Look at his way, Zuko. If I got away from you, where would I go, we're miles from the south pole, and if Zhou got me, I'd be on my way to the Firenation and to your father, so I have my reasons not to leave." I explained and he frowned.
" Before we met, did you know you were the Avatar"
" No, I didn't even know I could bend." I admitted." I didn't know I was the avatar until the night after your fight with Zhou." He was silent and before I could stop myself, I asked, " How did you get your scar?" something crossed his face and he turned to leave but I stopped him.
" Wait, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked."
" It's just not something I like to remember." Then he surprised me by closing the door and sitting down in front of me to me.
" it was three years ago..." he explained about how he had spoken out against plans to send new recruits into battle, on the front lines and how his punishment was to be an Agni kai, a fire bending duel but instead of it being the person he spoke out against, it was his own father. " I refused to fight back," he mumbled his face full of sorrow" for that he burned and banished me." I was silent for a few seconds before I mumbled, " The way you describe him, he sounds horrible."
" He's still my father" he told me.
I glanced down at my gloved hand before making a decision, reaching down I started to remove it, with him watching my every movement.
" my mother, she was very protective you could say, and you aren't the only one who has come searching in my village, the last time they came searching for Waterbenders, my mother hid me but I was a very stubborn child, I ran out to stop them from attacking my village and as a result..." I removed the glove and his eyes widened to see a scar running across the back of my hand, all the way to my wrist." I lost something that day" I mumbled as a tear fell down my cheek.
" My father wanted to help the other warriors of my tribe, so he went to war with the others but...I know he is not coming back." I pulled the glove back on and he was silent before asking," How do you know?"
" Because he told me so." then with that, I got up and left the room.
