The journey to the manor was serene for young Y/n. The boy was so engrossed in the sights and sounds that his worries momentarily faded away. Walter's smile broadened slightly as he observed his nephew's curiosity; he felt a sense of relief, believing the boy deserved a far better destiny than the one he had been dealt.
Walter could tell he was trying his hardest to be brave.
Walter: We're almost there Y/n, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the Manor, it's quite big!
Y/n remained silent, a silence so profound that Walter felt terrible. Nevertheless, he maintained his focus and continued driving, compelled to press on for both his own sake and for Y/n's.
He was not about to die and abandon Y/n, he should have been with him from the start.
Y/n: W-What do you work as uncle?
Walter: i work at the Hellsing manner, I have been for decades now, I serve the Hellsing family as a butler
Walter decided to keep his true occupation a secret from Y/n. The boy had already endured the loss of his father, mother, and home; he did not need to be burdened with the knowledge of the nocturnal creatures.
-------------
After thirty minutes of uninterrupted driving, Y/n and Walter arrived at the Hellsing manor. Glancing in the rear-view mirror, Walter noticed the spark of curiosity in Y/n's eyes. The boy remained silent, but the old butler couldn't help smiling; it was heartening to see Y/n's smile.
Halting just outside the Hellsing manor, Walter stepped out of the car with Y/n. Soldiers were scattered about, appearing battle-ready, which puzzled Y/n. Why would the manor require soldiers? Wasn't Hellsing simply a wealthy family employing Walter?
Y/n: U-Uncle Walter...
Walter: What is it Y/n?
Y/n: Why are there so many soldiers? is something wrong?
Walter muttered a curse under his breath; Y/n was evidently more perceptive than he had anticipated. Turning around and stooping to his nephew's level, Walter endeavored to seem composed, far from the visage of the angel of death...
Walter: it's nothing Y/n, i assure you, these brave men and women are simply here to make sure we're safe.
Y/n remained unconvinced, yet a blend of weariness and hunger halted any further inquiries. Even now, his eyelids were heavy, fluttering closed as his stomach emitted a faint growl, much to his dismay and chagrin.
Walter: it appears like you need something to eat, god your skin and bones Y/n!
Walter clasped Y/n's hand in his and guided him to the manor's front doors. For a moment, the boy hesitated, aware that he was intruding into this family's life without offering anything in return.
Y/n: I-I don't want to...enter...
Walter was confused for a moment, he crouched down to Y/n level and looked concerned.
Walter: What's wrong Y/n? you can tell me.
Y/N, however, did not want to add more stress to his uncle's day. He looked down at the ground, mumbling under his breath before raising his eyes to meet Walter's.
Y/n: I'm fine Uncle...
Walter let out a sigh; his expertise lay in being a butler and a vampire slayer, not in comforting children. He found himself at a loss on how to console a young boy who had endured such profound heartache, for it was not his vocation.
Regardless, he wasn't going to stop trying...
Walter: We can talk later, we should get inside, it's starting to rain.
As Y/n entered the manor with Walter, his eyes sparkled at the sight of the interior. Each wall was adorned with exquisite wallpaper and interspersed with paintings; the whole place radiated cleanliness and elegance. Unaccustomed to such grandeur, Y/n's excitement momentarily overcame his sorrow.
Y/N: y-You really work here?!
Walter: indeed! I've worked in this manor through everything, I have also served the Hellsing family for nearly 50 years now, and they are welcoming Y/n, Sir Integra even wants to meet you!
Y/n: Sir Integra? who's that?
Walter: Why, it's the woman I work for! She's been wanting to meet you since I told her I was taking you back with me.
Y/n: S-She won't be mad at me? for...all this?...
Walter's expression settled into a slight, sorrowful frown as he observed Y/n, who was so engrossed in helping others that he neglected his own needs.
Walter: Don't worry Y/n, she won't be mad with us, I assure you.
Y/n's gaze remained fixed on the floor. Within a matter of days, his life had shifted from familial bliss to total loss. Ordinarily, Y/n might have succumbed to despair, but he was determined to persevere, honouring his mother's heartfelt plea.
He wasn't going to stop now...
Walter: C'mon, Sir Integra is waiting for us.
---------------
Ascending the stairs near Sir Integra's office, Y/n paused, sensing the primal echo of being watched coursing through him. Fear gripped him momentarily, but upon glancing at his uncle, his apprehensions dissipated, comforted by the knowledge that Walter was there to protect him.
Walter: just through here.
Walter gestured towards a grand set of double doors, each emblazoned with the Hellsing family crest. Y/n swallowed nervously as he gazed up at the imposing entrance.
Without warning however, Walter opened the doors!
Walter: Come on! don't be afraid...
Gathering the remnants of his courage, Y/N entered the trembling room, which was vast. At the far end, two large windows allowed sunlight to pour in. Sir Integra sat at her desk, eyes downcast, but upon looking up at Y/N, her expression softened.
Sir Integra: I see your finally back Walter, I assume this is little Y/n?
Walter: Indeed, Y/n, this is Sir Integra, she had promised me to help raise you.
Another wave of helplessness swept over Y/n; he yearned to be stronger and better, but felt powerless. He saw himself as a frail boy, unable to save his mother...
Engrossed in his brief spell of self-contempt, Y/n didn't realize that Sir Integra had approached and was now towering over him. He appeared diminutive in her presence, and the air grew chillier with each moment of her piercing gaze.
Sir Integra: it's good to see you Y/n, you have my sympathies, losing your mother must be difficult.
Y/n: i-I'm fine...
Sir Integra, however, remained unconvinced. She could clearly see that the young boy was on the brink of tears, and although she did not intend to seem intimidating or scary, it was simply the aura she projected.
Y/n stomach grumbled, causing Sit Integra to chuckle slightly.
Sir Integra: Let's head to the dining hall, Walter can cook us up something as we talk...
