The Bell rings and I sit in my usual seat, convenient enough, in Coach's class. "Let's go. Sit, sit, sit, sit. We got a lot to cover today. Let's go. Quicker." He says as everyone piles into the classroom, taking their seats.
I sit in the back. Scott sits two seats in front of me. "Hey, Stiles, sit behind me, dude." Scott whispers, but Allison gets there before him. I roll my eyes and Stiles backs up and sit where he was going to sit before, the seat next to Allison's.
"Hey" Allison says to Scott. "Hey." Scott says back. "I haven't seen you all day." "Uh, yeah. I've been super busy." Scott says. "When are you gonna get your phone fixed? I feel like I'm totally disconnected from you." Allison admits.
"Uh, soon. Real soon." Scott says, probably lying. "I changed lab partners, by the way." Allison says. "oh, to who?" Scott asks, oblivious.
"To you, dummy." Allison says, teasingly. "Me? I mean, are you sure?" Scott asks. I cringe as the scene unfolds. "Yeah. This way I have an excuse to bring you home and study." Allison explains.
"Oh." Scott says. Me and Stiles make eye contact, both of us disappointed in Scott at the moment.
"You don't mind, do you?" Allison asks. "I just... I don't want to bring your grade down." Scott says, which is partly the truth.
"Well, I mean, maybe I can bring your grade up." Allison says. Stiles rolls his eyes. "come to my place tonight. 8:30?" Allison continues. "Tonight?" Scott repeats. "8:30." Allison repeats as well.
Coach slams a text book on a pile of textbooks. "Let's settle down. Let's start with a quick summary of last night's reading." Coach says looking at the students.
"Greenberg, put your hand down. Everybody knows you did the reading." Coach says immediately after. fucking Greenberg. "How about... McCall."
I know for a fact Scott didn't do the reading from last night. He was done for. And I can't even whisper the answer to him because, somehow, Coach as fucking super hearing. I think it might be better than Scotts.
"What?" Scott says, pretending to be dumb. "the reading." Coach says. "Last night's reading?" Scott says. I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose.
"How about the reading of The Gettysburg Address?" Coach says, making some students laugh. "What?" Scott repeats. "That's sarcasm. You familiar with the term "sarcasm," McCall?" Coach asks.
Both Scott and I turn our heads towards Stiles. "Very." Scott says, Stiles looks at us, proudly. "Did you do the reading or not?" Coach asks.
"Um... I think I forgot." "Nice work, McCall." Coach says. "It's not like you're not averaging a "D" in this class. Come on, buddy. You know I can't keep you on the team if you have a "D."" Coach continues. Scott nods. He still had the heart monitor on. Stiles still had coaches phone.
I heard beeping. "How about you summarize the previous night's reading?" Coach asks as Stiles takes out the phone. Scott's heart rate was going up, and fast. Scott shakes his head.
"No? How about the night before that?" Coach asks. Scott looks down. "How about you summarize anything you've ever read in your entire life?" Coach asks, raising his voice a little.
Scott's heart rate was at 135 and increasing. "I..." Scott stutters.
"No? A blog? How about... How about the back of a cereal box?" Coach asks. "No? How about the adults-only warning from your favorite website you visit every night? Anything?" Coach continues.
