Each year, when the trees were in full leaf, spring flowers replaced with summer blooms, House Valembry would visit King's Landing. It was vastly different in the summer, markets in the city filled with flowers and sweet fruits, the air rich with floral. Women would swim naked in the river, and rainbows would form during rain showers. Young spring foals would strike out on their own. The only true symbolism of new beginnings.
Being only seven, the walls of the Red Keep seemed to loom over her head. Maella thought it was the greatest piece of architecture she had seen, second to her own home. Crafted from red Valyrian stone, giving the keep its name. Anywhere from King's Landing, no matter what angle you craned you neck, the Keep would dominate the sky line. Taking many generations to fully be completed, its prowess made sense. Their banners, a firebird on a field of orange so light it almost seemed white and may have been silver, flapped in the gentle summer breeze. She was all too eager to get out of their wheelhouse, eyes searching the cyan expanse.
She sighted her father's dragon, soaring above. Her mother stepped out beside her, placing a warm hand on Maella's shoulder. Their dragons had remained in Halcomb, due to Cloudjumper being too young to fly and Daella's lack of love for flying. Frostbreak, her father's dragon, landed gracefully, his white face standing out from the rest of his black scales. Her eyes shone with awe. Maella admired dragons and hoped to one day to be at least half the rider her father was.
He jumped off his dragon, arms opening wide for the incoming hug from his daughter. She hugged him with such a force, he nearly stumbled back. Maeron let out a short laugh, hugging her back tightly. He smiled at his wife who approached with her own sweet smile. "You'd think she had never seen a dragon rider before."
Royal fanfare signaled the presence of the King and his Queen. King Viserys Targaryen embraced his sister warmly, before looking down to Maella and grinning. "I had only seen you last year, yet you have grown at a pace!" She smiled, proud of herself for winning the King's praise. Her father and Uncle exchanged pleasant words, each beaming. "Come inside, I'm sure you are weary from your travels. We have many festivities planned once you have recovered your strength!"
The Valembry family followed King Viserys through the grand halls of his castle. Princess Rhaenyra, heavily pregnant, greeted their host with a warm smile. Daella encircled her arms around her niece, smiling with a fondness she had always seen between the princess and her mother , "It is such a pleasure to see you again. My, how you have grown!" Rhaenyra chuckled, giving Maella's hand a light squeeze. She had always thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Second to her mother, of course.
Maella bid her parents farewell when she reached chambers, seeing them walk off with the King and Princess Rhaenyra. She looked back into her quarters, the sharp red fabrics and swirling patterns making her head spin. The bed was much too big for her stature, but each time her head rested upon the pillow, she would immediately be welcomed by sleep.
