The old factory loomed ahead, its derelict silhouette barely illuminated by the flickering beam of Scarlet’s torch. The building had long since fallen into disrepair, its once-bustling machinery now rusted and silent. The cold, damp air clung to Scarlet and Tom as they moved cautiously through the crumbling structure, the echo of their footsteps reverberating off the high, shadowy walls.

Scarlet, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings, turned to Tom. “Aren’t you scared to be here?” she asked, her voice echoing slightly in the vast emptiness.

Tom, his face illuminated by the weak beam of his own flashlight, shrugged with a grin. “Nope. I’ve always been curious about these kinds of investigations. I actually enjoy it.”

Scarlet let out a dry laugh, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. “I haven’t been home in two days. This case has been wearing me thin.”

Tom’s curiosity was piqued. “You married?”

Scarlet chuckled, shaking her head. “I have a son your age, idiot.”

Tom stopped in his tracks, a look of disbelief crossing his face. “Holy shit. You’re joking, right? I almost believed you.”

Scarlet’s smile widened as she continued to walk deeper into the factory. “I’m telling you the truth.”

Tom’s mouth fell open in surprise. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—”

“Why apologize?” Scarlet asked, a hint of amusement in her voice.

Tom hesitated, his face flushed with embarrassment. “I just had a different idea of you. I didn’t expect… Well, you know.”

Scarlet’s laughter was short but genuine. “You’re not the first to be surprised.”

As they navigated the labyrinth of rusted machinery and broken glass, Scarlet's torchlight flickered over a particularly dark corner. Suddenly, she stopped. “Wait…” she said, her voice cutting through the silence.

“What is it?” Tom asked, his flashlight sweeping the area.

Scarlet's beam settled on something partially obscured by shadows. “Found it,” she said, her voice tinged with satisfaction. She moved closer, her steps careful but purposeful.

Tom followed, curiosity and unease warring in his expression. As they approached, a strange, pungent odor began to permeate the air, growing stronger with each step. Scarlet and Tom reached a large, rusted vehicle, its once-pristine exterior now covered in grime and cobwebs.

Scarlet's beam of light revealed more details of the scene. The car, an old sedan, was in disarray, its windows shattered and doors slightly ajar. The smell grew more intense as they drew near.

“Shit,” Tom murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.

Scarlet’s expression hardened as she looked around. “Be ready,” she warned, her tone serious.
