The first rays of sunlight began to filter through the trees, casting long shadows and highlighting the exhaustion etched on everyone’s faces. Anushka stood beside Scarlet, who was sobbing uncontrollably on her shoulder. The amount of blood they had found told a grim story. Anushka knew there was little hope left, but she couldn’t show her own despair. She needed to be strong for Scarlet.
She gently disentangled herself from Scarlet and walked over to Ranveer. “What are we going to do?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The Reaper's Trail Ranveer motioned for her to follow him outside. There, sitting on a bench, was Aaron, a seasoned detective known for his meticulousness.
As soon as Aaron saw Anushka, he stood up. “Ranveer said maybe you could find something. No, he said you might already know the truth about the Reaper.”
Anushka sighed heavily. The Reaper was a notorious serial killer whose victims often vanished without a trace. “We’ve scoured every corner. There’s no sign of Ted,” Aaron continued, frustration evident in his voice.
Ranveer interjected, “What if the killer is taking the victims out of the city? We might be looking in the wrong place.”
Anushka’s eyes met Ranveer’s, her expression thoughtful. “You might be right,” she said, considering the possibility.
A New Plan Anushka glanced at her watch and grimaced. “Honey, I have a case to attend.”
Ranveer’s expression darkened. “Shit. We’re running out of time.”
Anushka stepped away for a moment, pulling out her phone. She dialed Sydney, her most trusted protégé. The phone rang a few times before Sydney answered.
“You’re up... You want to prove yourself, right?” Anushka asked without preamble.
“Yes, Mistress,” Sydney replied, her voice steady.
“Then prove your loyalty now. I need you to attend the submitted case in my place. I’m going to be out of town.”
“But—” Sydney began, only to be cut off by Anushka.
“No buts, no questions. Just make me proud,” Anushka commanded before hanging up.
Committing to the Search Anushka returned to Ranveer and Aaron. “I’m in,” she said firmly.
Aaron frowned, his brows furrowing. “Wait a minute. Splitting up might dilute our efforts. We need to stay focused.”
Ranveer shook his head. “We’ve covered the city’s central areas thoroughly. It’s time to consider other possibilities.”
Aaron interjected, “But what if we’re wrong? What if we miss something crucial here?”
Tom, another detective, approached them. “What if the killer took Ted out of the city?” he suggested. “It’s a long shot, but we need to consider every possibility.”
