"Here you go, Nezuko. This is all the food I could get," I said, gently placing the pieces of bread into her hands. Her bunny ears twitched slightly, the only indication of her worry as she looked up at me with wide, concerned eyes.
"But what about you, Tanjirou?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. I could see the tension in her posture, her frame huddled under the thin blanket we shared.
"I'll be fine," I assured her, ruffling her hair in a playful attempt to lighten the mood. Her bunny tail flicked as she offered me a piece of the bread, but I shook my head. The truth was, my own stomach had been growling for days, but Nezuko's well-being came first.
Living in a world where society's hierarchy was determined by the animal traits one possessed, we were at the bottom. Our family, simple rabbits, had always been looked down upon by the more powerful predators-foxes, tigers, and wolves who ruled over us. They lived in luxury, while we scavenged for scraps just to survive.
After our entire family was killed two years ago, Nezuko and I were forced to fend for ourselves. We had no home, no protection. I resorted to stealing, something I never imagined I'd have to do, just to ensure Nezuko had something to eat, a place to sleep. In this unforgiving world, we joined a group of others who had also been cast aside-Zenitsu, a jittery yellow cat with two tails; Inosuke, a fierce dog who insisted he was a boar; and Yuzu, a white cat who was as clever as she was secretive now that I think about it I didn't know anything about her past. Together, we formed a family of sorts, each looking out for the other.
Tonight was supposed to be our biggest heist yet. If we succeeded, it could change everything. No more stealing, no more hiding. But the stakes were high, and failure meant more than just going hungry. It meant death.
"Come on, Nezuko. Let's head back," I said, taking her hand. As we made our way through the dark alleys, I couldn't help but feel the weight of responsibility on my shoulders. Nezuko's bunny ears twitched as she clung to me, her trust unwavering despite the dangers that lay ahead.
When we arrived at our hideout, a dilapidated building tucked away in a forgotten part of the city, the others were already gathered around a makeshift table. The tension in the air was palpable, each of us knowing what tonight could mean for our future.
"Everyone ready?" Yuzu asked, her white cat ears flicking as she scanned our faces. Even in the dim light, her pale blue eyes seemed to glow with determination. She was dressed in black from head to toe, her normally pristine hair hidden beneath the dark clothing.
"Yeah," Zenitsu replied, his usual nervousness replaced by a rare calm. His cat tails swayed behind him as he checked his equipment one last time. Inosuke, ever the wild one, was practically vibrating with excitement, his dog ears perked and alert.
"We need to move quickly and quietly," I said, trying to steady my own nerves. My own rabbit ears twitched as I went over the plan one last time in my head. "The crown is in the main hall, heavily guarded. But if we stick to the plan, we can do this."
With that, we slipped out into the night, the moon casting an eerie glow on the royal castle as we approached. We crouched in the shadows, our breath shallow as we waited for the right moment to move.
"Let's go," Inosuke whispered, and we scaled the castle wall with practiced ease. Inside, the halls were eerily silent, the only sound the soft padding of our feet on the stone floors.
