I watched as the fields and forests outside my car window fly quickly as we race down the empty streets in Georgia.
My family was sending me to live with my cousin, Ashlyn, who suffered with the same auditory hallucinations as me.
They were painful when they were loud.. but usually they left me alone, until recently when I started to actually see things.
I grew up in Savannah, Georgia, my whole life and always loved visiting her, but her parents always refused to bring her to Savannah. I never knew why...
Today though... I would be seeing her for the first time in 4 years. She was never really a talker and we usually just practiced fighting and I would watch her do ballet.
We used to practice ballet every time I would visit her house, but I got out of practice and quit by the time I was 8.
I didn't really know how to feel about going to live with her full time... her family lives on this property on the outskirts of town with a "school bus graveyard" in their backyard.
I had seen pictures from my parents but didn't really know what to think of it.. it seemed... sketchy... like something was going on there that they weren't talking about..
As the car continued to move through the country roads, I started seeing familiar signage approaching. I looked at my driver, Ryan.
My parents couldn't bother to come out and drive me here after my last, spell..
I flipped out over this thing that looked like a scary monster, but apparently I was the only one that could see it. My parents labeled me as crazy and sent me to this place...
Now I'm worried that everyone will see me as this kid with mental health issues when that is not the case.
I flipped my long blonde hair over my shoulder as I started to braid it, Ashlyn used to braid her hair like this when we were younger, so I thought I might as well remind us of old times..
I watched the vast landscapes of forests and plains disappear into small towns and houses, we were approaching alto quickly.
I wondered what my new life would be like here as we passed the hospital and the school, this town was definitely more swanky than i remember..
As we pulled out into a more secluded area of town, I started seeing their familiar house come into vision. The graveyard still there and sticking out even more.
My driver pulled into their driveway and helped me out of the car. "Ms banner, do you need anymore assistance?" He asked me.
"No ryan I should be alright from here, don't let my parents treat you terribly.." I answer flashing a small empathetic smile as I pull my bags out of the hatch of the car.
"Alright. Have a good life kid, know I care about you.." he says and dabs his eyes with a small handkerchief.
"Oh Ryan I'll see you again surely." I say as i start to ascend their steps dragging my bags along with me.
"Definitely." He answers hopping into the drivers seat, tucking his handkerchief in his pocket.
I had a gut feeling that this would be the last time I ever heard from him again, or my parents. It was like I was leaving my past behind and starting anew.
I reached the porch of their stairs and knocked on the door just as Ryan was pulling out of the driveway, I waited patiently hoping it was Ashlyn's mom and not her..
I was dreading seeing her again, but just my luck that when someone answered the door it was the quiet red head that I remember.
Ashlyn Banner.
