Chapter Forty Two: A Jealous Sinner

Once the thieves returned to the real world, Akechi had something to tell the group right before sending the calling card as they held a meeting in Leblanc. 

Akechi: So I have an idea. We should wait to plant the calling card until right before the time limit. 

Sento: Huh? 

Ryuji: Why’s that? 

Akechi: Sae-san is a realist. Even if she believes the Phantom Thieves exist, do you think she knows how they steal hearts? Furthermore, if she believes they’re evil, there is a chance she expects that she herself will be targeted. 

Yusuke: So she’ll be on guard. 

Haru: Wouldn’t that keep the calling card from affecting her? Do you think the Treasure won’t appear? 

Akechi: I’m only saying it’s theoretical. Hence, it would be prudent for us to wait until we are driven into a corner to act. 

Morgana: I see. You have a point. 

Sento: If we did the calling card as normal, we would have to face even more backlash from the public hearing we killed another person. 

Makoto: I think that would be best, too… You know my sister well. 

Ryuji: So when should we do it?

Akechi: The investigation is on November 20th, so we’ll act the day before, on the 19th. To give the calling card a day to take effect, how about we deliver it on the 18th? 

Makoto: Yes, that’s a good plan. 

Morgana: All right. Then everyone get prepared!  

He instructed as everyone nodded their heads ready for their last mission as Phantom Thieves. And after weeks of waiting, Makoto snuck the calling card into her home and waited for Sae to read it as she sat on the other couch as she listened to her older sister read it. 

Sae: “Madame Sae Niijima, a great sinner of jealousy. You have lost yourself amidst your obsession with success. For its sake, you are even willing to promote injustice as justice… We have decided to make you confess all of your sins. We will take away your twisted desire. From, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.” 

Makoto: I found it in the mailbox. 

Sae: To think they would send me one… 

Makoto: ! 

Sae: They brand me a criminal and plan to change my heart? What nonsense! They only care of disposing those who are an inconvenience to them! Fine! I’ll just have to catch them first! 

Makoto: And when you do, you’re going to interrogate them, right? 

Sae: That’s right. In a special interrogation room underground. 

She said as she turned around as Makoto’s eyes widened in shock as Shadow Sae appeared as she smirked at the younger sister before announcing, 

Shadow Sae: Let’s do this fair and square! 

Makoto: *gasps*

Sae: I should probably get back. Once this case is over, why don’t we go to a hot spring? 

Makoto: Sis, I- I’m on your side. 

Sae: You’re an odd one. I’ll see you later. 

She said in a false tone of gentleness as Makoto covered her eyes as tears started to flow out her eyes as she started to cry as Sae left the apartment now even more determined to show her “justice” to the country. And an hour from that, the thieves entered the Palace as they rushed back into the Treasure room, only to find it completely empty.
