Callie and her dad took cover in the truck, bracing themselves for what was coming. "I'm thinking EF-3." Tyler said, concerned. "This truck still have post-hole diggers on it?" Callie asked. "They haven't been used in years."
"Well, it's worth a shot." She suggested. Her dad shook his head, then pressed the button on the control panel. The equipment whirred, but didn't seem to work. "Ahh, come on! Dammit!" Tyler exclaimed, slapping the control panel. Callie looked around, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted the twister. "I see it! It's coming this way!" She shouted. "Son of a bitch!" Her dad yelled, slamming his hand on the panel again. Callie kept an eye on the tornado as her dad got out of the truck, going to inspect the diggers. He kicked the equipment with his heel, which must have knocked something loose. The post-hole digger tore into the ground, digging deep. Callie got thrown to one side of the vehicle, as the other piece of equipment was still stuck, making the truck uneven. "Hang on!" Her dad exclaimed, running over to get the other digger unstuck. He kicked it, it took a few tries, but it eventually worked. The truck evened out, allowing Callie to get back into the passenger seat. Her dad looked at the tornado heading for them, he couldn't help but smile. Callie got out of the truck to, staring in awe at the massive storm. "Look at her, Cal! She's gorgeous!" He said, impressed. It had been a while since he'd been able to admire a storm like this, it reminded him of the old days with Kate and his old crew of "Tornado Wranglers." "She's beautiful." Callie commented, mesmerized. They watched as the twister grew closer, Callie's fear suddenly turning into fascination. "We should probably get in the truck." Tyler said, the storm only a few miles away now. "Yeah." Callie agreed, climbing inside. She and her dad closed up the truck and buckled themselves in, preparing for the storm to hit them. As they were safe in the truck, Kate and Javi were trying to make it back to the house. They pulled up in front of the house and sprung out of Javi's truck, looking behind them to see the twister. They stood, watching it. "Man, she's pretty!" Javi exclaimed. "Yes, she is!" Kate agreed, a big smile on her face. Now that they were safe, they could just watch it. The chances of it coming towards them were slim, but they would be able to seek shelter just in case. "I wonder if Cal and Tyler are seein' this." Javi said. "I'm sure they are, and they're probably just as immersed as us."
"Of course they are! I bet you they're not even scared."
"Knowing them, you're probably right." Kate chuckled. She enjoyed being able to enjoy a storm again, it made her feel like her old self. Javi could tell, Kate seemed like she was in her happy place. "You know, I could always take you out chasing again." He suggested. Kate looked at him, she sighed and shook her head. "I can't do that to my family, they need me."
"Kate, Tyler and Cal love this shit as much as you do! I'm sure they'd even join us!"
"Javi, I don't know."
"C'mon, Kate! Just come with me once."
Kate thought about it for a moment, she looked back to the storm, she agreed that she'd love to be up close again. She watched the tornado for a little while, then she turned back to Javi. "Fine, but only if Tyler and Callie are on board." She agreed. "Yes! I knew you couldn't resist!" Javi exclaimed, shaking his fist in the air in celebration. Kate laughed at his excitement, then she went back to observing the tornado in the distance. Out yonder, Callie and her dad were watching it approach them from inside the truck. It was rapidly growing closer, Callie had never been this close to one before. "You're sure this is safe?" She asked her dad. "Just you hold on, Cal." He smirked. Callie couldn't help but be a little nervous as it swept over them. They were now inside the tornado, but the truck stayed firmly in place. She and Tyler were starstruck as the twister engulfed the truck, Callie couldn't help but chuckle. "Wow." She whispered, amazed. "Pretty awesome, huh?" Her dad asked as they exited the tornado. "That was sick." She commented, still not over what she had just experienced. They sat in silence, just taking it all in. They watched as the storm weakened, and eventually dissipated miles away. The wind died down and the rain turned into a light drizzle, it appeared this storm was over. "That's what you and mom did?" She questioned her dad after a few minutes. "Yup, we've been in twisters even bigger than that."
"Really?!"
"Yeah, really! Your mom has even been inside an EF-5."
"EF-5?! How did she make it out?"
"By some miracle. We crafted a way to stop the tornado, I'll let her tell you about it. She saved a lot of lives that day, though."
"Damn, must have been terrifying."
"It was, we'll tell you the rest of the story when Kate and Javi find us. You're old enough to hear it now, sure you can handle it." Her dad explained. Callie nodded, she was eager to hear about it. She had never heard the story before, she assumed that it was because her parents just didn't want to scare her when she was little. Once the storm had ended, Kate and Javi set out to find Callie and Tyler once again. They found them after about an hour of searching, a relief. "Hey, took y'all long enough!" Tyler shouted, walking up and hugging Kate. "You guys okay?" Javi asked Callie, giving her a hug as well. She nodded, and they joined Kate and Tyler. "Did you guys see that storm?!" Kate excitedly questioned. "See it?! We were in it!" Her husband answered, smiling. "She was amazing!" Callie chimed in. Callie told Javi and Kate all about it as they drove back to the house, towing Tyler in the old truck behind them. They made it back, Callie and her dad were able to change the tire with different tools. Then, they went back into the house. "Hey, guys. After our little adventure, I think it's time that Cal hears about what happened in 'El Reno years ago." Her dad brought up. Javi and Kate looked at each other, they both nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I think she's old enough now." Kate said. "Buckle up, Cal. This story is wild." Javi warned. They all sat down at the kitchen table, ready to relive the scariest day of their lives.
