Chapter Four: Cracks in the Façade

The following morning, Minjeong awoke to the sound of her alarm clock beeping insistently. She groggily reached out to silence it, her mind already racing with the day's tasks. Today felt different; a lingering heaviness from the previous night's conversation with Seokjin weighed on her. She had classes, group projects, and the ever-present need to maintain her perfect image.

After her morning routine, she chose a soft lavender sweater and a pair of dark jeans, aiming for a look that balanced casual comfort with sophistication. As she left her dorm room, she received a message from her mother reminding her to stay focused and keep up her impeccable standards. Minjeong forced a smile and replied with a reassuring "I will."

The walk to her first class, Introduction to Literature, was accompanied by a light drizzle. The campus, usually bustling with energy, seemed subdued under the grey skies. Minjeong arrived early, taking a seat near the front. She scanned the room, recognizing a few familiar faces but feeling strangely disconnected.

Professor Lee, an engaging and passionate lecturer, began the class with a discussion on the themes of authenticity and self-identity in classic literature. Minjeong found herself deeply engrossed in the lecture, the subject matter striking a chord with her internal struggle. She took meticulous notes, her thoughts drifting to the contrasts between her public persona and her private self.

During a break, Jimin approached her with a bright smile. "Hey, Minjeong! How are you holding up?"

Minjeong returned the smile, grateful for the distraction. "I'm good, just a bit tired. How about you?"

Jimin's eyes sparkled with warmth. "I'm doing well. Hey, a few of us are getting together for a study session later. Want to join?"

Minjeong hesitated, her mind racing with the expectations she needed to meet. But the prospect of spending time with Jimin and other classmates offered a much-needed break from her routine. "Sure, I'd love to."

The rest of the class passed quickly, and Minjeong felt a sense of anticipation for the study session. It was a small but significant step towards finding balance in her life.

The study session was held in one of the cozy study lounges on campus. Minjeong arrived to find Jimin, along with a few other students, already settled in with textbooks and laptops spread out across a large table. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, a stark contrast to the rigid expectations she often felt.

As they worked through their assignments, the conversation flowed easily. They discussed their classes, shared study tips, and exchanged stories about their college experiences. Minjeong felt herself relaxing, enjoying the camaraderie and genuine connections forming around her.

At one point, Jimin leaned over and whispered, "I'm really glad you joined us today. It's nice to see you unwind a bit."

Minjeong smiled, feeling a warmth that she hadn't felt in a long time. "Thanks, Jimin. I needed this."

After the study session, Minjeong felt a renewed sense of clarity. She decided to take a walk around campus, hoping to sort through her thoughts. The rain had stopped, leaving the air fresh and cool. She wandered through the quiet pathways, reflecting on the day's events and the conversations she'd had.

As she passed the campus library, she saw Seokjin sitting on a bench, lost in thought. She approached him cautiously, unsure of how their conversation would go after the previous night's revelations.

"Hey," she said softly, sitting down beside him.

Seokjin looked up, his expression a mix of surprise and relief. "Minjeong, hey. I wasn't expecting to see you."

"I needed some fresh air," she replied, her tone reflective. "And I wanted to talk."

Seokjin nodded, his gaze earnest. "I've been thinking a lot about what we talked about last night. About the pressure we're under and how it's affecting us."

Minjeong sighed, feeling the weight of his words. "Me too. It's hard to maintain this perfect image all the time. I feel like I'm losing myself in the process."

Seokjin took her hand, his grip firm and reassuring. "We don't have to be perfect, Minjeong. Maybe it's time we start being honest with ourselves and each other about what we really want."

Minjeong felt a surge of gratitude for Seokjin's understanding. "You're right. I think we've been so focused on meeting everyone else's expectations that we've forgotten about our own happiness."

They sat in silence for a while, the campus around them slowly coming to life as students moved between classes. Minjeong felt a sense of calm wash over her, the conversation with Seokjin providing a much-needed perspective on her struggles.

Later that evening, back in her dorm room, Minjeong reflected on the day. The study session, her walk, and the heartfelt conversation with Seokjin had all contributed to a growing realization: she couldn't continue living under the crushing weight of others' expectations. It was time to start finding a balance, to allow her true self to emerge.

She picked up her phone and sent a message to Jimin: "Thank you for today. It meant a lot to me."

Jimin's reply was swift and reassuring: "Anytime, Minjeong. I'm always here for you."

As Minjeong prepared for bed, she felt a sense of hope. The façade she had carefully maintained for so long was beginning to show cracks, but through those cracks, a more authentic self was starting to emerge. She knew the journey ahead wouldn't be easy, but for the first time in a long while, she felt ready to face it.
