Two years.
For two years he hid from her. Trying to drown out her rambles, that rarely ever made sense.
"Luke?"
The boy covered his ears as he watched her shadow walk by under the closet door.
He hated having to hide from her.
Then suddenly, the sound of muffled cries reached his ears, making the nine-year-old curse under his breath as he realized what it was.
The sound of his mother calling for him must have woken her up.
Opening the closet slowly, he peeked out of the door and checked to see if his mom was anywhere near before bolting down the hall to his and his sisters shared room.
It had been his idea to move baby Lori into his room two months after she was born when his mom's fits started to scare him more and more. He didn't want to risk anything accidentally happening to Lori.
Rushing into his room he quickly froze when he saw her.
May Castellan stood over her daughter's crib; her eyes still faintly glowing green as she stared at the crying toddler.
Luke hesitantly walked closer, and Lori upon noticing him reached her arms out towards him as she cried like a banshee.
"Mom?" Luke hesitantly spoke. "What are you doing?"
She had never gone to Lori during her fits, it was always Luke she freaked out over. Which he was glad for, he didn't want Lori to experience their mother's fits the same way he does.
May turned to face her son, her glowing looking at him with no emotion behind them, the second her eyes met his, the boy wanted to run and hide back in the closet, but something made him stay right where he was.
"You will destroy her," May whispered, her voice hollow. "You will break her, and she will drown in her sorrow because of you."
Luke stared at her wide-eyed, while her own eyes faded back to normal. Once he was sure her fit was over Luke surged forward and grabbed the still crying Lori from the crib clutching her close to him as if she would disappear if he let go.
"Luke?" His mother's voice made him look up, finding the woman staring at him confused. "What's going on? Why are you crying?"
His mother's words seemed to snap him back into reality, as he felt a tear slid down his face.
"No reason," he told her, wanting to get her out of the room. "Everything's fine."
May nodded. "Okay, I'll go and start lunch."
Luke waited for a moment, not moving despite Lori trying to wiggle out of his arms to make sure she wasn't coming back. Once he was, he placed Lori on his bed before bending down and pulling out two large backpacks and Lori's diaper bag from under his bed.
It was time to go, he couldn't stay here anymore. It was all too much for him, he tried to hold out for as long as he could, so Lori wasn't so young. But he couldn't take it anymore.
"You want to go on an adventure, Lori?" He asked, as he went to her dresser and started grabbing clothes. "We'll go anywhere we want."
"Bobo!" Lori smiled brightly at him, not understanding a single word he said.
"That's right, just me and you." He smiled sitting down on the bed beside her as she grabbed one of his old stuffed toys.
Luke watched her for just a moment, he knew it was a risk to take her with him. But he just can't leave her behind, he would never forgive himself. He had to take Lori with him, if he had to steal to keep her fed, he will. If he has to fight to protect her, he will.
"I know you may not understand now, and maybe you'll resent me a bit for it later on." He said as the girl looked up at him with her dark eyes. "But I hope one day, you'll understand why I did it."

She hated him.
She hated him for all of it.
How could he do this?
Lori Castellan clutched the fabric of the shroud in her hands as she sobbed. She had taken it when no one was looking, she didn't understand why he deserved such an honor after everything he's done.
Campers have died because of him. Friends of hers.
And it was all Luke's fault.
People tried to tell her it was Kronos' fault, but Lori wasn't stupid. Luke was old enough to understand what he was agreeing to when took Backbiter, he knew what he was doing when he took the Master Bolt and Hades Helm to start a war between the gods.
He knew what he was doing when he tricked Annabeth, a girl who had become a sister to them, into holding up the sky for hours.
He knew what he was doing when he manipulate Silena to be the spy at camp.
He didn't deserve a funeral shroud.
And he didn't deserve her forgiveness.
With a sob, Lori Castellan tore the shroud in half and tossed it into the lake, watching as the two pieces slowly sank into the water.
She will never understand why he would do this to her.
