The thrill of a summer camp love.

Narrator's POV

"Bye baby, please don't do anything too crazy."

Y/N rolled her eyes and just waved bye at her parents. They were being so dramatic about this whole thing. She just transferred to a new high school, and right at the start of the semester, there was this school camp planned, coincidentally. Her parents were very afraid she wouldn't fit in, but also that she would go too far with this newfound freedom. One whole week with probably barely any supervision, it sounded like her parents' nightmare.

Stepping inside the bus, Y/N realised that she really didn't know anyone. She just sat at one of the free window seats and watched as all the kids boarded the bus.

Someone suddenly sat down next to her. Y/N turned to look at the girl and furrowed her eyebrows. "Hi?" she greeted. She studied the blonde for another second, she looked so awfully familiar. "I know you," she concluded.

The blonde chuckled, nodding her head. "Yeah, I know you too. Y/N."

Y/N closed her eyes before giggling too. Of course, how could she forget? "Leighton Murray," she finally remembered. They had both joined the same youth tennis program a couple of years ago. The last time she had seen her, they were probably around the age of 10, 11. They've definitely grown up a bit meanwhile. She let her gaze wander over Leighton's features. Yeah... she looked way cuter than she remembered.

"You didn't recognise me just now, did you?" Leighton teased with a smirk.

"How did you even recognise me?" Y/N asked in return.

"We saw each other every week for like one year straight, hello." And out of everyone they were in the same group with, they clicked with each other the most. She kind of saw Y/N as her little sister and noticed any time she seemed down during practice, and every time she would pull all the tricks from the sleeves to cheer her back up.

"Okay, fair enough." Y/N nodded along before chuckling. "Are you sure it's not because I've beat your ass multiple times at our matches that left quite the impression."

Leighton tilted her head to one side, her lips pursed together wistfully. "Hm, I'm pretty I absolutely crushed you at our matches."

"Nope."

Leighton looked at her for another second before shaking her head, smiling. "How come I've never seen you around before? Did you just transfer?"

"Yeah, my dad got a job offer to come back here in New York City."

The two old acquaintances chatted away for the rest of the bus ride. Two and a half hours really wasn't enough for them to catch up. Leighton realised that she much preferred the Y/E/C-eyed girl's company over Esme and Francesca's, there was just something so carefree about her. Her gaze dipped down to Y/N's lips as she talked. Maybe this camp wouldn't be as lame as she thought it'd be.

A cranky voice yelling through the speakers was able to pull them out of their own little bubble. "Alright, folks, we're here! Welcome to your new paradise for the following week."

It felt like a joke. They came from an elite private high school in New York fucking City. This wooden cabin (?) looked like it came from the slumps. It seriously felt like it was a punishment for the rich kids. Everyone groaned and complained as they stood in front of the camping accommodation.

A camp director came to greet them and gave the group of high schoolers a tour around the campsite. It did not get better from there. Rooms were shared among eight people, in wooden bunk beds, and the bathroom was separated entirely from the camp house and shared with everyone. It looked quite scary and dirty, most people had decided on the spot to not shower or pee unless they really needed to. It was honestly just a normal camping experience, but certainly not for these students.
