"I will call out your names for attendance, raise your hand when you hear yours," the professor said. "Smaller animals may call out or enlist the help of a larger student. Any questions? No? Good." With that, he started listing of names, and I returned my attention to my book on knife fighting. I raised my hand when I was called on, but I didn't look up from my book. The class started off easy, discussing variables and the distributive property, a basic review of concepts.
When problems were written down, I looked at the first few then went back to reading. I didn't see any problems that were too challenging, and the professor wasn't calling on anyone near me to answer. After a few more pages, I was called in to solve a problem, and I marked my spot with some scrap paper before closing the book to get a closer look at the problem.
"If you factor the numerator on the left, you'll get x plus two times x plus five," I said. "The numerator on the right factors out to three times x minus ten, and the denominator on the right factors to x minus ten times x plus five. The denominator on the left cancels out with the numerator on the right to make x minus ten, which cancels out with the denominator on the right to make it x plus five. Cancel out the numerator on the left, and you're left with x plus two, which is the answer."
"Very good, Tim," the professor said. "Now then Ronald, why didn't you give this equation a try?" he said, pointing at another equation on the board.
I went back to reading the book, wincing from the memories the familiar name brought back. The rest of the class went by without anything eyecatching, but the peace was interrupted near the end of class when I heard the intercom start up. "Tim the human, please report to the headmaster's office. I repeat, Tim the human, please report to the headmaster's office."
I stood up, putting my book into my bag as I grabbed it and walked out of the office. No small amount of muttering started when I stood up to leave, but most of them were just harmless and curious comments.
" What's a human?" I heard someone ask.
" Probably some rare species," I heard another person say just before I closed the door behind me.
Walking down the hall, I pulled out my map to see where I would have to go. The headmaster's office was pretty close to my classroom, so it only took a few minutes before I was standing in front of the office door. When I entered, I saw a tiger sitting in the headmaster's chair with a police officer on his left and right. The plaque on his desk seemed to be made of bronze, and it read, "Headmaster Gon".
"I have called you here today," the headmaster said, "to ask you about your missing roommates. Please comply with any questions the officers have to ask." I nodded, and the officer on the right started talking.
What were you doing yesterday?" he asked. "What people were you with?"
"I spent the day with my roommates," I said. "Alex, the oldest of us, had planned a guys' day out for everyone in my dorm, including me. We got breakfast at a place called Aunt Riandra's. I don't remember what was ordered. We spent the morning walking around town, browsing some stores here and there. For lunch, we got pizza at Little Beastar's, and then we spent a few hours at B-Strike. Alex said he had a surprise planned for dinner, so we all just followed him. We ended up at a place Alex called the black market, and the others followed him in while I stayed behind and went to my dorm. I waited for them for a bit, but eventually I just went to sleep. I knew something was wrong when I woke up and they hadn't returned, but I had school, so I planned on reporting it after school finished."
"You said you didn't follow them into the black market," the officer on the left said. "Why?"
"It sounded illegal," I replied. "I generally try to avoid crime, and my legal guardian is a police officer. I couldn't stop the others though."
