"Could I have your attention, please?" Professor McGonagall's voice echoed through the room.
Everyone turned to look at her. "Right. Today, we will be transforming animals into water goblets. Like so." She picked up her wand and walked over to her bird.
"One, two, three, Vera Verto." The bird transformed into a beautiful Hogwarts water goblet.
Professor McGonagall then asked Ron to have a go. He nervously pointed his wand at his rat, Scabbers, and muttered the spell. Scabbers transformed into a water goblet, but it was covered in hair and still had a tail.
"That wand needs replacing, Mr. Weasley," Professor McGonagall said sternly.
Hermione's hand shot up, and she looked as though she was about to burst. "Yes, Miss Granger?" Professor McGonagall asked.
"Professor, I was wondering if you could tell us about the Chamber of Secrets?" Hermione asked. Professor McGonagall looked taken aback, her eyebrows rising in surprise.
"Very well," Professor McGonagall continued, "as you all know, Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Now, three of the founders coexisted quite harmoniously. One did not."
"Three guesses who," Ron sniggered, eliciting laughter from the Gryffindors while the Slytherins glared at him.
"Salazar Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. In other words, pure-bloods. Unable to sway the others, he decided to leave the school. According to legend, Slytherin built a chamber in this castle known as the Chamber of Secrets. Shortly before departing, he sealed it until such a time when his own true heir returned to the school. The heir alone would be able to open the chamber and unleash the horror within, and by so doing, purge the school of all those who, in Slytherin's view, were unworthy to study magic."
"Muggle-borns," Hermione sighed next to Kimberly.
Kimberly raised her hand. "Yes, Miss Snape?" McGonagall acknowledged her.
"Professor," Kimberly began, her tone serious, "if Slytherin's heir is supposed to open the Chamber of Secrets and purge the school, why has it taken so long for anything to happen? Is there any indication that the heir has returned?"
McGonagall's eyes narrowed slightly as she considered the question. "That is indeed a pertinent question, Miss Snape. To our knowledge, the Chamber has remained sealed for centuries. There have been rumors and speculations over the years, but no concrete evidence to suggest that the heir has resurfaced—until recently, of course."
