It's been three days since they had followed the spiders into the Forbidden Forest. They had tried to piece together the puzzle of the attacks, researching in the library and talking to other students. Kimberly had been the one pushing the hardest, combing through books and old notes, but without Hermione's sharp mind, they struggled to make sense of anything.

"Wish you were here, Hermione," Harry sighed, his voice heavy with the weight of everything that had happened.

Hermione lay in the hospital wing, her face frozen in a glassy, lifeless expression. Ron sighed sadly as he watched her, the reality of her condition sinking in deeper each day. Harry, sitting beside her bed, gently rubbed her left hand. Suddenly, he felt something crumpled in her palm. Frowning, he looked down and carefully unwrapped her fingers to reveal a piece of paper—a page torn from a library book.

"What's that?" Ron asked, leaning closer.

Harry's eyes widened as he smoothed out the crumpled page. "Kimberly, Ron—this is why Hermione was in the library the day she was attacked. Come on!" With that, they dashed out of the hospital wing, racing down the corridors.

"Of the many fearsome beasts that roam our land, none is more deadly than the Basilisk. Capable of living for hundreds of years, instant death awaits any who meet this giant serpent's eye. Spiders flee before it." Harry looked up at Kimberly and Ron, his voice urgent. "The monster in the Chamber of Secrets is a Basilisk. That's why I can hear it speak. It's a snake."

Ron's face paled as the pieces clicked into place. "But if it kills by looking people in the eye, why isn't anyone dead? Why are they just petrified?"

Harry paused, his mind racing as he pieced together the details. "No one's looked directly into its eyes. They must've seen its reflection or through something else," he muttered, turning the page over in his hand. He read aloud, "Colin saw it through his camera lens. Justin must have seen the Basilisk through Sir Nicholas. But Sir Nicholas is already dead—he can't die again. And Hermione... she had the mirror. She must have been using it to look around corners, trying to protect herself in case it came along."

Ron frowned, still puzzled. "But what about Mrs. Norris? I'm pretty sure she didn't have a camera or a mirror, guys."

Kimberly's eyes lit up with realization. "The water! Remember how we found her near that puddle of water by the flooded hallway? She must've seen the Basilisk's reflection in the water."

"Spiders flee before it! It all fits!" Harry exclaimed, his voice rising with urgency.

"But how's a Basilisk been getting around? A dirty great snake—someone would have seen it by now, right?" Ron said, frowning as he tried to piece it all together.
