I love you

The night was unusually warm for spring, with a gentle breeze that carried the scent of blooming flowers. Tim and Lucy had spent the evening together, something they had started doing more often, though neither of them explicitly acknowledged it as anything beyond friendship. But tonight felt different. It was quieter, more intimate, as if the city itself had conspired to give them this moment.

They had dinner at a small, cozy restaurant that Lucy had picked, tucked away from the usual spots. Afterward, they found themselves wandering through a nearby park, hand in hand, though neither of them could recall when they had started holding hands. It just felt natural.

They eventually came to a stop under an old oak tree, its branches forming a protective canopy over them. The moonlight filtered through the leaves, casting a soft glow on Lucy's face. Tim couldn't help but stare, mesmerized by how beautiful she looked in that light, her eyes bright and warm as they met his.

"You know," Lucy said, her voice almost a whisper, "I love nights like this. Just... being here with you. It's like everything else fades away."

Tim smiled, a rare, genuine smile that he reserved for moments like these, moments with her. He took a step closer, his thumb brushing across her hand as he held it. "Yeah, it's nice," he agreed, though he knew it was more than just nice. It was perfect, and it was because of her.

For a long moment, they simply stood there, letting the silence speak for them. The air between them was charged with something unspoken, something that had been building for months, maybe even longer.

Tim's free hand found its way to Lucy's cheek, his touch gentle, almost hesitant. He had been through more than his fair share of tough situations, but this—standing here with her, feeling everything he had kept bottled up for so long—was more terrifying than any of it.

"Luce," he began, his voice low and rough with emotion he could no longer contain. "I—"

But before he could finish, Lucy leaned in, closing the distance between them, her lips finding his in a soft, tender kiss. It was slow, unhurried, as if they had all the time in the world. And in that moment, they did.

When they finally pulled back, their foreheads resting against each other, both of them were breathing a little harder, hearts pounding in sync.

"I love you, Tim," Lucy whispered, the words falling from her lips as naturally as breathing. There was no hesitation, no fear—just pure, unfiltered truth.

Tim's eyes closed, letting the weight of her words settle over him like a warm blanket. It was everything he had wanted to hear, everything he had been too afraid to admit to himself.

He pulled back just enough to look at her, his hand still cradling her cheek, his thumb brushing over her skin. "I love you too, Luce," he replied, his voice steady, filled with the certainty of a man who had finally found what he had been searching for.

The smile that spread across Lucy's face was brighter than any star in the sky. "You do?"

Tim chuckled softly, nodding. "Yeah, I do. And I'm sorry it took me so long to say it."

Lucy shook her head, her hand coming up to rest on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her palm. "It's okay," she said softly. "We're here now, and that's what matters."

They stood there for a while longer, wrapped up in each other, letting the reality of what they had just confessed sink in. It was as if the world had shifted, and suddenly everything made sense.

Finally, Tim spoke again, his voice a little lighter, a teasing glint in his eyes. "So, what do we do now?"

Lucy laughed, a sound that made his heart swell with happiness. "I think we just keep doing what we're doing," she said. "But maybe... with a few more kisses?"

Tim grinned, pulling her closer. "I can definitely get on board with that."

And as they kissed again, this time with the knowledge that there was no going back, they both knew that this was only the beginning. They had found something special, something worth holding onto. And for the first time in a long time, they both felt at peace, knowing that they had finally said the words that had been in their hearts all along.

"I love you," Tim whispered once more, as if to seal the promise.

"I love you too," Lucy replied, knowing that those words, simple as they were, held all the power they would ever need.
