It was a typical Friday afternoon at the Mid-Wilshire precinct. Sergeant Bradford and Officer Chen sat at their desks, working through their last bits of paperwork before the weekend. The air was filled with the usual chatter and hum of activity, but Lucy and Tim were in their own little world, as they often were since they'd started dating.
Suddenly, the door to the precinct opened, and a woman walked in, her heels clicking against the floor. She was impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, her hair and makeup perfectly done. Her gaze scanned the room and settled on Tim, who was engrossed in his report.
"Sergeant Bradford?" the woman called out, her voice sweet and confident.
Tim looked up, a bit surprised. "Yes, that's me. Can I help you?"
The woman approached him with a warm smile. "I'm Emily Thompson. You helped my mother last week. I wanted to thank you in person."
Tim stood up, offering his hand. "Just doing my job, Ms. Thompson."
Lucy watched the exchange from her desk, her eyebrows raising as she noticed how Emily's hand lingered in Tim's. She tried to focus on her work, but her attention kept drifting back to them.
"You were so kind," Emily continued, her voice dropping slightly. "I was wondering if I could take you out for a drink as a thank you?"
Tim glanced at Lucy, a smirk forming on his lips. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm already taken," he said, looking back at Emily.
Emily's smile faltered slightly, but she nodded. "Of course. Well, if you ever change your mind, you know where to find me."
As Emily walked away, Lucy tried to keep her cool, her eyes fixed on her paperwork. Tim returned to his seat, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
"What?" Lucy asked, not looking up.
"Nothing," Tim said, leaning back in his chair. "Just wondering how many more admirers I'll have to turn down today."
Lucy rolled her eyes, but a small smile tugged at her lips. "Oh, please. She was just grateful."
"Grateful?" Tim teased. "Looked more like she was ready to ask me to dinner."
Lucy finally met his gaze, a playful glint in her eyes. "And what would you have said?"
Tim leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "I would have said I already have plans with the most amazing woman I know."
Lucy's smile widened, but she couldn't resist a little jab. "Smooth, Bradford. Real smooth."
He grinned. "Admit it, you were a little jealous."
Lucy shrugged, her cheeks warming slightly. "Maybe a little. But only because I don't like sharing."
Tim reached across the desk, taking her hand in his. "Good, because I'm not interested in sharing either."
They sat there for a moment, their fingers intertwined, the rest of the precinct fading into the background. It was moments like these that made the long days and tough calls worth it.
"So," Tim said, breaking the silence. "Drinks after shift?"
Lucy nodded, squeezing his hand. "It's a date."
As they returned to their work, Lucy couldn't help but feel a swell of happiness. Tim was right; a little teasing, a little jealousy—it all just made what they had even more special.
