❝ i gotta let you go, i must you the only one that's holdin' me down (ooh) ❞ — sza
𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐃, at the edge of the park, her thoughts a tangled mess. the events of the previous night replayed in her mind like a broken record, each memory sharp and cutting. unable to face the noise of her own home, she walked aimlessly, her feet leading her to a familiar bench under an old oak tree.
as she sat down, the cool breeze ruffling her hair, memories of a time when things were simpler began to surface, unbidden.
flashback 1.

𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐖𝐀𝐒, thirteen, awkward and unsure, standing alone on the edge of the soccer field during lunch. she had never been good at making friends, always feeling like the odd one out. then, out of nowhere, matt had appeared. he was all messy hair and a lopsided grin, his soccer ball tucked under his arm.
"hey, you wanna play?" he had asked, his voice bright and inviting. faith had hesitated, not sure if he was serious, but matt just smiled wider. "come on, it's just for fun."
that was the start. from then on, they were inseparable. they would meet after school, kicking around the ball, or sometimes just sitting on the grass, talking about everything and nothing. matt had this way of making faith feel seen, like she mattered, and for the first time in a long time, she felt like she belonged.

𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋, was different. everyone was trying to find their place, and matt started hanging out with a new group of friends. they were louder, bolder, and faith felt like she was fading into the background.
there was this one day, early in freshman year, when they were sitting on the bleachers after gym class. matt was talking about gabrielle, a girl who had recently transferred to their school. faith could feel the shift between them, a new tension that hadn't been there before.
"she's cool," matt said, not noticing the way faith's smile faltered. "i think she likes me."
faith had tried to ignore the twist in her gut, forcing a laugh. "yeah, she's... she's nice."
but inside, faith felt something she couldn't quite name—jealousy, fear, maybe even a bit of anger. it was the first time she realized how much she cared, and how much she stood to lose. she would never admit her feelings, not wanting to mess up their friendship.
flashback 3 .
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀, was buzzing with the usual chaos, and faith was walking into the lunchroom, scanning the crowd for a familiar face. out of the corner of her eye, she saw matt and gabrielle sitting at their friend groups table, she saw her bestfriends izzy, ella, carter, chris and nicks miserable faces. matt and gabrielle were laughing, leaning a little too close.
faith's heart sank as she watched, the air around her growing thick with something heavy and cold. and then, in a moment that seemed to stretch on forever, gabrielle leaned in and kissed matt.
it was like a punch to the gut. faith felt the world tilt, the noise of the cafeteria fading to a dull roar. she couldn't believe what she was seeing. she had always trusted matt, always believed he would never do something like this to her. but there it was, plain as day.
without thinking, faith had turned on her heel and left the cafeteria, not caring if anyone noticed. she just needed to get away, to breathe. she had waited outside until the bell rang, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. she hated him. and that was final. matthew sturniolo was no longer faith havens bestfriend.
back to present day .
𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐊𝐄𝐃, the memories fading as she was pulled back to the present. she stared at the park around her, the same bench where she and matt had shared so many laughs and secrets. the air felt colder now, the shadows longer.
she had never really moved on from that moment, never let herself heal from the wound that had cut so deep. maybe that's why it still hurt so much, why seeing matt again after all this time brought everything rushing back.
as faith sat there, she wondered if it was worth holding onto the past, or if it was time to let go. but letting go felt like giving up, and she wasn't sure if she was ready to do that.
the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long, golden shadows across the park. faith sighed, pushing herself up from the bench. it was time to go home, to face whatever awaited her there. but as she walked away, she couldn't shake the feeling that the past wasn't quite done with her yet.
