It was a Tuesday, and she woke up early. That meant she might see Billy on his route if she got out there early enough. She sits up, getting out of bed and making it like she always does. She changes quickly, putting on a short sleeve dark pink dress, doing her hair as usual.
She grabs her bag, going out into the living room. She frowns, her father's van is gone. It was Tuesday, so he should still be home. She shrugs it off though, she won't complain. She sees a granola bar sitting at her spot, and she grabs and eats it quickly. She checks the time, seeing that it is 6:00. Billy should be by her house soon then. She slips on her shows and opens the front door, locking it behind her.
Like she thought, Billy was two houses down from hers. She walked down the sidewalk, opening the front gate and walking through, Billy strolling by on his bike. He playfully tosses the paper at her, hitting her on the shoulder.
"So sorry, didn't see you there," Billy said with a smirk. He was still now, sitting on his bike in the road in front of her,
"You could try sounding more sorry Billy," she replied, rolling her eyes with a smile. "I know you gotta get back to your route. See you at school!"
Billy gives her a wave, putting his hands back on the bike handles and pushes off a pedal.
"See you at school Melinda!" With that he was off again, continuing to deliver papers to the other houses down the street. Melinda starts her walk to school, a little smile on her face still from being around her friend.
If only Melinda knew then that would be the last time she saw him for three months.

She met with Finney halfway through the walk like she normally does. Gwen was still with him that morning so she talked with her for a little bit. She wasn't super close to Gwen, but she was a nice enough girl and Melinda knew how much she meant to Finney.
When walking to school with Finney, she typically makes it to school on time rather than early, so she didn't get to see Robin this morning. She bit down on her disappointment and continued walking into the building with Finney; Gwen had broken off from the both of them about 5 minutes ago to walk with her friends.
Finney surprisingly wasn't as talkative as he usually is, but she chalked it up to his excuse of not sleeping well. She had a feeling there was more to it than that, but they had an unspoken agreement to not ask about those sorts of things; they were just understood between them and they preferred it that way.
They split off to go to their own respective classes, Melinda walking in the direction of her math class like every morning. She goes to sit at her desk, Vance looking over and giving her a once-over. It was his little way of checking in with her without making it seem like he cared; he had to keep up appearances and all that.
She gave him a small smile, and turned towards him.
"Did Griffin decide I'm walking home with you guys again?" She asked lightly. He gave her a barely noticeable smirk before replying.
"Nah, I've got detention again today," he said, and she nodded her head. Her father shouldn't be home till later so she decided to wait with him today,
"Got it. I'll stick around for a bit then," she said in response. He gave her a thankful look, not saying anything else. Class then started, so Melinda turned her attention to the teacher. And Vance did what he always did; sleep through the entirety of first period.
