No one knew exactly where this woman came from. Either she was transferred from another office, or she was simply accepted to a vacant position, which did not seem to be in the department. This was one of the hot topics raised in the intervals between serious and dangerous investigations. They even checked her personal file but found nothing remarkable. The only thing that colleagues could not afford was to ask directly. After all, it could be one of the secrets of the mysterious authorities, which almost no one saw.
So, her name was Selina Mooney and she appeared in the FBI cybersecurity department a few days ago like a real ghost. She greeted everyone one morning, said she was glad to see everyone again and went to one of the backup computers. It's like she has been here many times before.
Maybe they just didn't notice her? Teams often have such invisible employees. And when, a couple of days after her appearance in the department, she was connected to the investigation of a hacker who had been wanted for the past few years, almost everyone decided that this was the reason.
And Selina, ignoring the rumors and curious glances, did her job. She put her pass to the lock and entered one of the basement — secret — cells and closed the door again behind her.
In the darkness, she could make out the silhouette of a prisoner — he was sitting on a kind of bed chained to the wall, his arms wrapped around his knees. She tossed the stack of documents onto the flimsy, thin-legged desk.
"What, again?" The prisoner raised his head.
"Again." she nodded.
"Aren't you tired yet? I won't tell you anything. Search."
"Some things don't change. When's the right time, Jake?"
And only these words made the prisoner take a closer look at the agent who was supposed to ask him this time. Selina smiled, confident that now he would change his behavior. He slowly got to his feet and walked over to her. His hands squeezed her shoulders, so that she winced, but managed not to make a sound. For a few seconds, Jake just stared into her eyes, as if hoping to see in the reflection the answer to a question that was never asked.
"What are you doing here, M..." Jake hesitated for a moment, noticing the name on the badge. Her name was different and, it seems, there used to be a different hair color, but it's definitely her. "Selena?.."
"Cooler. Selina Mooney."
"What are you doing here?"
The gaze did not allow her to concentrate, and she had to give up, look away. But this was the only battle she could afford to lose.
"I came for you. You didn't think I'd just leave you with them, did you? What kind of a friend would I be otherwise?"
"No, how did you get here?"
"Hacked them," She threw a triumphant glance at Jake and managed to see how his eyes widened, how he threw up his hands and walked around the camera — as much as space allowed.
"You did... what? It's impossible!" he stopped for just a few seconds, glancing over his shoulder at her. "Almost."
"I'm following in the footsteps of a talented friend."
"What exactly did you do?"
"I entered myself into the databases, made documents… In general, when they catch me, I'll a corpse."
Selina was grinning. She wasn't worried and she wasn't scared at all. And the trembling hands, hastily hidden in pockets, goose bumps all over the body and droplets of cold sweat running down the neck, are really nothing.
