The quiet hum of people bustling around, the loud clinks of dishes and silverware touching. The gentle sensation of the knife cutting through the food.

It has no taste.

It's sickening to consume.

Interrupted, a gentle caress of warm hands caressed and cupped my cheeks bringing me back to reality.

"Are you alright?"

They asked softly their eyes filled with concern and worry as they held my gaze, their eyes were beautiful and warm. I closed my eyes and nodded.

"Are you sure?"

They asked, "I have been talking to you this entire time and you have been cutting your steak, but there is no more of it left to cut..."

Not realising that I had been cutting the meat with the knife so many times that it has become unrecognisable.

I placed down the knife slowly and stood up.

"Sorry, I think I am not feeling well...."

I placed down my share of the cost of the meal as I turned to leave walking quickly almost running out, they called out for me and quickly paid. Rushing after me they caught my hand.

"..."

Instead of saying anything, they walked beside me...quietly they intertwined their fingers with mine. Instead of the barrage of questions I have become so accustomed to being asked we walked quietly down the street enjoying the hum of the life passing us.

They gently squeezed my hand and I looked over at them and they looked over at me with a smile as they leaned and gently wrapped themselves around my arm.

"Why are you not asking questions?"

I asked curiously with my gaze ahead, guiding us through the street.

"..."

They did not respond immediately as they gave my hand a gentle squeeze, again.

"There are many people who-"

They interrupted me, "because, I know how you are...I chose to stand with you because...you first stood by me. On the lowest of days, you brought me out of the rain, the pain, the cold, the endless loneliness..."

I walked beside them quietly, we found ourselves at a park and I guided them to sit down on the bench. I sat down beside them as we over looked the park.

"They were all small gestures, but they meant more than words could ever describe. I hope to do the same..."

They looked over at me with hopeful eyes and a shy yet meaningful smile.

"That was a long time ago...I have changed...for better or for worse..."

I gently caressed their cheek and they leaned into the touch.

"That's fine! I am not perfect and I don't expect you to be either, if you have doubts then let me be your cornerstone just as you were for me!"

They said brightly as they took my hands with renewed confidence and hope.

"I don't want to hurt you-..."

They shook their head.

"I won't take no for an answer!"

I found myself laughing, sighing softly I rested my head on their shoulder.

"...thank you."
