The conversation with Mark was still lingering in my mind when the sound of a car engine broke through the quiet evening air. My heart skipped a beat, and I instinctively smoothed my hair, preparing myself for the moment I had been waiting for. Taehyung was finally here.
But before I could fully compose myself, the front door swung open, and a flurry of movement entered the foyer. I blinked in surprise as a girl—no, a woman, with an air of confidence and warmth—stepped inside. She was holding a bouquet of flowers, her smile radiant as she spotted me.
"Lisa!" she exclaimed, closing the distance between us in a few quick strides. Before I could react, she wrapped her arms around me in a hug. "It's so great to finally meet you!"
Caught off guard, I returned the hug hesitantly. She pulled back, her eyes bright as she handed me the bouquet. "Welcome home," she said, her voice full of genuine warmth.
"Thank you," I managed to say, still trying to make sense of the situation. I glanced at Mark, silently asking for an explanation.
Mark, taking the hint, stepped in smoothly. "Lisa, this is Jenny. She's a close friend of ours—mine and Taehyung's."
I nodded slowly, taking in the information. Jenny was beautiful, with a delicate yet strong presence that seemed to fill the room. Her bright smile and easy confidence made it clear that she was someone who was used to being liked.
Just then, Amanda appeared, her face lighting up at the sight of Jenny. "Jenny! I'm so glad you're here."
Jenny turned to Amanda with a warm smile. "I couldn't miss the chance to help out, especially after you told me about Lisa coming back and all the dinner preparations."
As I watched them interact, I realized they're closer. I don't know why but I felt bad.. Or should I say Jealous?
"Jenny has been a big help around here," Amanda said, her voice filled with affection. "I don't know what I'd do without her."
I forced a smile, trying to hide the flicker of insecurity. "It's nice to meet you, Jenny. Thanks for the flowers—they're lovely."
Jenny beamed, seemingly oblivious to the undercurrent of my emotions. "I'm so happy you like them. I just wanted to make you feel at home."
She wanted to make me feel at home??? Doesn't she know I already consider it as MY home?
Amanda's phone buzzed. She stepped aside to take the call, her expression shifting slightly as she listened.
When she returned, there was a hint of disappointment in her eyes. "That was Taehyung. He said he won't be able to make it to dinner tonight. Something came up at the last minute."
I felt a sudden drop in my chest, the anticipation I'd been carrying all evening deflating in an instant. "Oh," I said quietly, trying to mask my disappointment.
Jenny noticed my reaction and placed a reassuring hand on my arm. "Don't worry, you'll see him soon enough. Taehyung can be a bit unpredictable, but he's worth the wait."
Her words were kind, but they did little to ease the hollow feeling inside me. I nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, I'm sure."
Aunt Amanda, ever the gracious host, quickly moved to salvage the evening. "Well, let's not let that spoil the night. We still have a lovely dinner to enjoy!"
With that, she led us all to the dining room, but as we walked, I couldn't help but feel a growing sense of unease. Jenny's easy familiarity with everyone, the way she seemed to fit seamlessly into the life I had left behind, and the absence of Taehyung—it all left me feeling like I was on the outside looking in.
